Hi,

New on this forum, I hope I'm in the right Topic and will make it right !

... and I will start with a (probably ! ) boring question :

I try to identify a strato for the wife of a friend of mine who is dead ! and she wish to sold it .
The guitar is NOT close to me, so I'll try to describe the best I can .

. She looks like an RI62 and is Fiesta Red,
. she has GOLD hardware,
. she has a Custom Shop Logo in the back of the head,
. and the neck plate read : R37163
. she is from 1985 to 1995 ( my friend was in the USA at this time )

As She wish to sold it : what kind of price could she ask ? ( the guitar is REALLY in good shape ).

a great Thanks for your help ;)

José

Impossible to determine, given the sparse description.

More important are the physical details......

Number of frets
Type of fretwire
Fretboard radius
Headstock shape
Headstock decal format
Type of tuners
Type and number of string trees
Type and composition of the pickguard
Type and configuration of the bridge
Type and configuration of the pickups
Volume and tone control layout
Type of neck plate

You've given us nothing to go on.

Arjay

Agree with the previous.
Plus, if you want real friendly & real eager help from the forum, post pics. As many and as detailed as possible, from every angle (preferably also from the inside, but taking apart a possible CS Strat may be an issue), and posted right here on the forum, not behind some link.

Or take the boring way out, send the serial number to consumerrelations@fender.com and see if they can help with the specs. Then google for similar guitar prices.

The instrument *seems* to be a '60 Custom Shop relic just as you've surmised. Noteworthy, it doesn't appear to have ever had a trem cover installed. The no-logo G&G tweed case likely dates to the early/mid '90s.

You should have this guitar professionally appraised to ascertain its true value. I'd guess it could command something close to $4500 but Gruhn or another pro might say differently -- perhaps even more.

Provided that dark line isn't a cracked neck.

I think your accurate title is 1960 Stratocaster MFG Model#010-6000/6010 made from 92-98, simply based on the color info you provided.
The blue book for a 60's CS says add 10% for the color and 10% for the gold hardware.
That would imo bring it to about $2400, other factors could change that number:
COA
signatures of maker
other upgrades, pickups for instance -stock would have been CS Texas Specials

Your description in the title of "NOS" or Closet Classic, Heavy Relic don't apply to guitars built prior to the end of 1998.
Your serial number represents the first evolution of "Time Machine" which turned into the Relic Series descriptions above when Cunetto began relicing guitars for the CS in 95 until 99.Those instruments also carry Rxxxxx serial numbers.

Retroverbial , arth1, sfceric64 : Thanks a lot

This Strat was on eBay and as I don't have these informations, plus the fact I can't try it ( too far from my home) AND the guy was absolutely UNABLE to provide a single/simple information ... I was too scared to buy it ...
ANd she was finally sold for 1300$ ... ...

Anyway , I've already 5 strat but my "top of the line" is only a 1991 RI62 :) ( the four other one are "partcasters" BUT build with good components -mostly US RI62 parts- ).

So I've a "Bonus" question about a neck I have bought some ( 5/6 years ) ago :
I never succeed to identify it and there is "probably ???" a problem on it ( crack neck as you said ? ) .

Here are the pics :

We can read on the back of the head "JH041890" ??? and in the heel : "3.93" (date of building ?) Zaverella, the "Art Esparza" logo ( Art was at the Custom shop ) and the first Custom SHop logo .
The fretboard looks really like Brazilian rosewood, is 9"5 with 6105 frets .

Is this a "pre" master builder ? or ???

here is what could be a crack ? :

Image

I need to mention that, 5/6 years later this neck is still perfect and this " crack ? " ( or is it 'a mark on the wood' ?)
is still the same .

Thanks for your comments

I doubt that "crack" is actually a crack -- more likely, merely one of a myriad of factors that create the figuring common with all wood grains. I wouldn't give it a second thought.

As for the possibility that the fretboard is Brazilian rosewood, that's *extremely* unlikely since a trading ban on such lumber has been in effect for nearly fifty years. My guess is, it's probably Honduran.

There's nothing at all wrong with a competently assembled partscaster built with quality components. The only people who get wrapped around the axle about such instruments are usually fashionistas concerned more about a guitar's pedigree than the sounds it creates. Most of my twelve Strats are self-built using (mostly) genuine Fender parts. And I've never lost a moment of sleep over that.

How the heck do those two quotes combine?

Correct !

... in fact, the guitar was on eBay at this moment and I was scared that everybody rushes on it as ... I plan eventually to buy it !

and I take this sentence from the real guy "I try to identify a strato for the wife of a friend of mine who is dead ! and she wish to sold it "

who describe EXACTLY the situation and the fact HE can't give any information.

Sorry for this "tricky subterfuge"

... but anyway ... I didn't get this Strat : This is my punishment

BUT I apologize anyway for this " half of lies"

...And I hope you will forgive me for wanting to protect this auction, and you will understand

I for one understand your concern.

No harm, no foul IMO.

Sorry you missed out on the auction. But Ebay deals are like city buses -- if you miss one, don't worry. Another one will be along in twenty minutes.

Thanks for your understanding

And, in fact, this guy not only know that I made such searches this way but was really pleased that I help him by the way.

Finally, I'm a little bit disapointed that he didn't get better auctions for this widow :(

For myself, without being able to try it, I couldn't take a such Financial risk .

And as you say : may be the next time

Buying a guitar on line requires a leap of faith -- no doubt about it. My forays have always been fruitful (knock on wood) but it could've just as easily gone the other way.

Apology accepted for my part.
For the future: trying to "protect" any internet sale is absolutely futile - which was proven here.
