Good day,

I am planning to buy this Highway One Stratocaster, this will be the first Fender that i'll buy.
Can you see if this is a real Fender and if there are any flaws?
I know the headstock is real but im not quite sure about the body.
If you can't see it, what will i need to check before buying it?

Thank you,
Kevin van Dijk.

+1!

Nobody wants to risk their computer stepping into something that a couple of swipes on a doormat won't remove.

Post the photos directly!

The instrument's bonafides seem to be in order. A few nicks and scrapes but it looks to be "all there". If I'm not mistaken that color was known as "Chrome Red". Very pretty.

Looks right to me. Don't forget it's the cheapest US Strat, so don't pay American Standard price. You also need to know what the frets are like after 15 years of use (same as any used axe) and allow for that.

Otherwise, stick a steel trem block on it, and (I think) you have a decent guitar. Others will of course disagree!

Cheers - Peter.

I'm not saying it isn't legit but would welcome others comments on a couple of observations:-

Headstock decal looks very near the edge.

There are countersunk screws on the switches and PUPS, also a vintage style trem cover. I haven't got my references to hand so would this be correct or indicate it had been changed?

HW1'S weren't MiM then? (Edit) No they weren't...idiot (/edit)

I'm not disagreeing with you, just trying to break down the Highway One 'mystery'.
So, some of the HWY1's fall right into the category you describe - sorta American Specials of their production year. But then there are the nitro finished, hot-rod-pckupped, greasebucketed models which I'd actually compare to be close to the AVRI Hot Rod series - except od course for the neck profile, headstock and frets. And (which is of course nice for a prospective buyer) even those usually sell for way less than AmSeries/Standards.
For a player looking for something distortion-friendly, all HWY1's are one possibility.

But, to the OP's guitar: looks OK to me. Edit: Read John C's post. I don't think the decal is too far off to not be an original. The screws are fine for a 2002.

Greasebucket didn't appear until the 2005 revision. The OP's guitar is a 2002.
Odd thing about the pickups listed in the service diagrams (part number 0054594000) is they are now described as Vintage 70's Mexican and appear in the Classic Series 70s Strat.

The Fender way of explaining the universe is sometimes a bit tricky, but that's what they say about the Greasebucket in the specs; "In 7/2005, Controls changed from Tone 1. (Neck Pickup), Tone 2. (Middle Pickup), to GreasebucketTM Tone Circuit."

BTW, sorry if I hijack the topic somewhat, but who was the Greasebucket designed for - it says in the 2006 Frontline that "This feature was developed for a Custom Shop artist"..?

I noticed that too. Also the "contour body" sticker border seems much more pronounced than normal but it may be just due to the photo...
