Hi there,
This is my first post here, so thanks for having me.
I've got a 1974 Stratocaster here. Olympic White with maple neck. All the numbers are great and the pots etc date correctly. I got it from a friend who had it gifted to him in about '82(?) and it still has the protective plastic on the guard.Thing is, I didn't think Fender had plastic om the guard till the late 70's or early 80's? Is that right? There is copper tape inside the guard, so someone has been in there, but...not sure about this guard!? It looks right though..Can anyone help with this conundrum?
Cheers
Steve

Still got the plastic after all this time. What is the point of a guitar if it isn't played?

What these guys are saying, is it would be nice to "see" what the condition of the plastic film looks like on the pickgaurd.
Even well taken care of, un-played, and stored in the best of environments....something from the 70's would at the very least be bubbling or pealing at the edges.

Hi, thanks for responding.
I'm not sure how to upload a photo. Yes there is bubbling and dust all around the edge. I should point out I'm a dealer and repair person and as far as I can see everything looks correct as I said in my op.
I was hoping someone would know *when* Fender started with the protected plastic parts. My associates have been dealers since the 70's and remarked that they didn't remember plastic coating in that era, but that didn't mean they didn't have them. I don't think a photo is gonna make any difference to the knowledge base. No disrespect intended.
Thanks anyway. Have a good day.

Industrial plastic, whether laminated or single-ply, is always shipped from the manufacturer with protective film over the finished surface(s). It remains in place even as the production technicians at Fender cut, bevel, and machine the holes for the various components to be mounted. Back in the day (pre-1987) it fell to dealers to remove the film prior to the guitar being displayed for sale. There were no tags affixed to this film proclaiming "MADE IN USA", the type of pickups installed in the guitar, or anything else. Today, the film is left in place for the owner to deal with as he/she sees fit. If the pickguard on your guitar has any of those tags stuck to the top of the film, it's likely a modern replacement part.
