Hi all,

I'm a new guitar player and want a HSS Stratocaster because of the wide range of music that it can cover.

I have two options the HSS Shawbucker American Standard and the regular HSS American Standard. They are both available for the same price.

I would like to play music such as Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Van Halen, general funk and blues.

I want the humbucker to be powerful enough to play the hard rocking Nirvana and Guns N' Roses, nothing heavier than that is required.

Which one would you recommend? The Shawbucker or HSS American Standard?

If it were me I'd give the Shawbucker a go.
It's designed to sit in well with the single coils, and it majors on tone, rather than output.
You can always stick a stompbox in front of your amp if you want to rock out.

I just bought a Shawbucker a few weeks ago and so far I love it. My band plays everything from country to oldies to classic rock. I have gigged with it twice now and it has more than handled it. The fat 50'so in neck/ middle sound awesome and the shawbucker is solid. There are better bucker pups out there but this combination so far seems great. You probably do want a stomp box for the rock stuff. Also the shaw is a little trebly but that is what the tone knob is for!
I do not know the regular hss so cannot speak to that.
