Tanning and stain changes is likely part of it, and so is robotic scraping of the skin.
But I think a main reason is that makers back when hand rubbed the sheaths with saddle soap or beeswax before shipping. I never see that anymore. At most, they may have been sprayed with the equivalent of spray-on shoe polish. Brush that crap off, and massage in some saddle soap (if you like it soft) or beeswax (if you like it hard). It's a dime well spent.

Same with leather amp handles - wax them yourself, first thing, before they get a chance to suck in acids from your hand. Because chances are that the factory pinched a penny on not doing it, and the risk of a handle disintegrating a few years down the road isn't something they lose sleep over.
