I am currently reading "The Stratocaster Cronacles", a top notch history book that was written for the 50th anniversary of the Strat. It is a excellent book, which is very well written and illustrated. It's not just for gearheads, it's a very well book that places the Strat and Fender in the context of music of the past 60 years. It comes with a CD containing interviews and a significant sampling of Strat sounds. It's $50, so it's not cheap, but it's one of those books that an enthusiast can enjoy and re-read periodically. It would also make a very nice gift.

Ha! You just appointed yourself as Official Historian to the Forum. All those questions about when rosewood fingerboards started, when the Mexican factory opened, who designed the headstock - all those threads belong to you, now!

Get revising, because there is a written test in the morning...

Cheers - C

I don't think it's that kind of book. There are some books that are for collectors. Those books detail model changes, etc. This doesn't get into that kind of detail. I'm sure it does get into such things as when production became international, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

Yeah, I've seen it advertised. Haven't got round to picking it up yet - but my birthday is getting nearer. I'll start surreptitiously mentioning it round the breakfast table and see if it gets added to the list.

But it's a long list...

I got that book for my birthday (together with my Strat), and I think it's great, lots of nice pictures. It does have the information of when which changes were made, but it doesn't go too much into the details.
I was a little disappointed with the CD. I can understand that they couldn't take recordings of the original artists, but what's on the CD is IMHO too much talking and too chopped up. It also might have been nice to be able to hear different Strat models.

Excellent book. I got it for free when I purchased my new 2008 Am Standard.

My take on the CD sound samples was that they were pretty good. They gave a sense of what can be done with the instrument. I do agree that it was a tough task to pick just 50 sounds. I would have liked to have heard more samples. That guy Greg Koch does a great job with figuring out how famous songs have been played with the Strat.

I have owned it since it came out and have been through it several times,

The soul of sound 60 years of fender amps is just as good and has two CDs with sound clips.

Regarding your post above, it made me think of Pete Townshend as per a documentatry on the Who that I saw last night on VH1. It was interesting that he seemed to go from exclusively playing Gibson SGs and Les Pauls (in the late 60s and all of the 70s) to playing seemingly only Fender Strats and Teles from the 80s on to today (minus the spurious Rickenbacher).

He's apparently taking advantage of Roland electronics systems which have been incorporated into this guitar.

Do I recall a You-Tube site where this guitar is demonstrated by his tech??

That is a great book, lots of cool strats to look at, the old advertisements... etc.

I really dig those old pics, Buddy Holley looks like he could be holding my strat!

"The Stratocaster Chronicles" should be required reading for everyone in this Forum. It will answer a great many questions.

It is a great book. I hope the authors write a book on the Fender Custom Shop.
