Hi, I have a 2014 60th Anniversary Strat with 54 pickups. At certain volumes I can hear hissing sound. Do you think it's from the guitar or amp? If it's the amp then I'll leave it but if it's the guitar maybe I could send it for shielding or something. But it's just hissing, not humming like my other with Texas Special pickups. Anyone with 54 pickups? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Is it from the amp or the guitar ? Easy.

Power on the amp with nothing plug at amp's inputs, amp alone.
Do you hear the hiss you are talking about at same volume ?

1- Yes hiss ; it is the amp not the guitar . Wich amp do you use ?
Vintage amp may need a tune-up
2- No hiss ; it is not the amp.

Hiss only with guitar plugged.
Shielding the guitar ? It will help if job is well dome and do by a somebody with knowledge.

Magnetic field in you house may do some noise thru the guitar; cellphone, PC, neon light, light dimmer, electrical motor.
Power off all those thing and see.

A high power amp will make some hiss a high volume when you do not play guitar

Troubleshooting weird noises:
Guitar/cord/effects/amp/room/house/electrical-appliances-not-related-to-guitar-gear.
Test different combinations, eliminating one source at a time.

If you don't get the hiss on another guitar (the TexSpecials one), it suggests the 60th Anni may be the culprit. Shielding is one option, but check&clean (contact cleaner spray) the pots, switch etc. first.

I can't test the amp with the Texas Special because it hums and I'm OK with that. I unplugged the 60th Anniversary and no hiss or hum. I actually plugged in my Martin through a DI and guess what? It works. Oops carried away. I meant no hiss. I don't want to accept that it's the guitar. I am enjoying it so much I don't want to send it :? If the hiss is inherent in 54 pickups I'll leave it that way. I'll send it in if the hissing is not a usual thing for 54 pickups. Anyone knows if 54 pickups hisses? Thanks in advance.

It's my home amp Fender Mustang I v2. I use that through a headset and the hiss is apparent even without headset. The hiss kicks in from about volume 6. I've tried on guitar volume, amp volume, master volume and gain, same thing. No hiss at mid/low volumes. But no hum though. Just hissing.

If 54 pickup's are known to hiss (I personally don't know)...then what good would they be to a LOT of consumers? I (as well as millions of people) like to record music...and why would I buy a guitar with pickup's that are KNOWN to hiss, if my intentions are to record?

Don't picture Fender purposely putting out pickup's that are known to hiss, and taking their chances on isolating a smaller number of consumers that "don't care".

I would say there is a legitimate issue with said guitar and/or amp...not a purposeful hiss from the pickup's. And you're just gonna have to troubleshoot each thing (or combination of things), as jmattis said.

The CS '54 set is not RWRP, so some kind of extra noise can be expected in certain conditions.
But Bauzer writes that the Texas Specials hum (differently from the '54 hiss...), and that set is RWRP - that's why I'm thinking maybe it ain't the guitars at all. Many kinds of electrical appliances can cause noises. Fluorescent lights, computer or ceiling fans, wifi and bluetooth stuff, just to name a few usual suspects.

All single coil are noisy but how much noise is too loud for you ?

Sounds like a bad ground wiring problem, a common cause for 60-cycle buzz.

Have you checked the wires? if not, remove the pickguard and check what's wrong with them. Poor soldering is another factor for a pickup to hum. Bear in mind that noise can also occur with faulty guitar cables.

I have the same guitar. The '54 pickups are not "quiet" so don't expect them to compare to current noiseless pickups (like the N3 or N4). They are modeled after 60-year-old SINGLE COIL technology.

But it's a GREAT, sweet, vintage noise, recorded in many many classic recordings! YMMV.

EDIT : I also have hiss at higher gain and higher volume. I just see this as a product of the vintage pup. Unfortunately, I don't know how much hiss your guitar produces as comparison.

"Hiss" is generally the byproduct of an active electronic device, where inherent noise within the circuit overcomes its intended function. Traditional single-coil pickups are passive devices and thus, are subject to external influences which may generate spurious-and-audible effluvia. I'm doubtful that there's anything amiss with the guitar.

Update: it turns out the hiss is coming from the extension cord to my headphones. It took a little while to isolate where the hiss was coming from. Luckily it wasn't the guitar or amp. Thanks everyone!!
