I'm a total noob at guitar modification. Total noob, so maybe this is a stupid question. Reading another thread someone mentioned a wired replacement Fender pickguard. I did a cursory Google search, but am I correct in interpreting this to mean that I can buy a fully functional pickguard, with pickups already mounted? If I'm understanding correctly, I could change a SSS configuration to a HSS without having to route or modify the guitar's body just by purchasing a wired replacement pickguard? Is it really that simple?

If "yes", where do I find such things, and what do I need to know to make sure any purchase "fits" my guitar. Are all Fender bodies routed for HSS configurations and hidden by the pickguard?

Apologies if my question is overly "dumb".

You can find loaded Stratocaster pickguards of virtually every configuration on Ebay. However, if you're contemplating a swap from S/S/S to S/S/H or H/S/H, take a look at your guitar's body beforehand to ensure that it's been routed to accept such pickups.

As well as checking your chosen configuration will fit - this can only really be confirmed by opening the patient up - be aware that not all pickups and pre-loaded pickguards are produced equal. There is a lot of really cheap sh...stuff out there and (subject to your model of guitar) it is unlikely you will improve things without spending £200 or more on a pre loaded guard.

I would strongly advise against buying anything other than from a reputable source, these most likely to include their own brand pickups. The cheap guards will have inferior electrics and pickups to those Fender supplied.

Also note that, while the guard will be loaded, you will still need to solder the earth wire to the trem' claw and solder the jack socket wires. If you can do this, swapping pickups alone isn't really that much more difficult.

+1

"Some assembly required" still applies.
