I think the new Clapton Strats have a V neck.Has it always been V over the years or is it a recent change.I played on a Clapton Strat of the late 80s & the feel pretty different from the newer ones.

Everything made in the 80's feels different...but not in a good way...that was a really hard time for Fender and their quality was at an all time low.

Check what the Doctor wrote two thirds of the way down the first page of this thread:

You are not going to find a better answer to your question than that.

I'm in Sam Ash on 48th Street, Manhattan about 4 mos ago auditioning the new '57 Hot Rod, surprised and pleased with the feel of this modified V-neck as the specs describe it. I take down the Clapton (production Artist), and comment to the salesperson about the difference in the necks and he replies that the CS Clapton is different from the production Clapton.

He goes over to the 'if you need help please ask section' and brings over this guitar whose neck is 'whiter' in finish that the guitar I'm holding and darn if the back of that neck wasn't just a tad slimmer and more tapered than the production guitar, the finish of which was a bit more 'vintage'.

In fact, you've likely read my commentary that the neck on my '93 seemed to have more of a taper than the current guitar.

If you followed Ceri's suggestion you've read my comment about AlainLaFrance's guitar. In a prior post about that adventure he observed that his guitar has an even more delicate feel that the CS Clapton.

I suppose the answer to your question is "YES!" as is your observations about the first generation Clapton guitars of the '80's. I have read that their power plants produced a more intense tone back then.

Keep in mind that, in much of the controversy kicking back and forth in these posts, we are not seeing divine intervention to enlighten us. One of three things must apply here....either we are correct, or Brad has too much to do, or it's more fun to keep us guessing.

I've heard the newer Blackie (since 2001) has a "softer V" than its predecessor.

Less of a hard "V", it is more rounded now.

I believe I read where Clapton was having hand and/or wrist problems from the original V neck and asked Fender to make the V less pronounced.

That's an interesting development...however when it comes to the Custom Shop complying with my request for a Clapton neck profile on a $3K+ order, perhaps they should have inquired as to what my preference was, and not Eric's.

I think I like the original Clapton sig model with the Lace p/u's better. Could never find one at a reasonable price, but my G.A.S. has abated for the time being.

Well I certainly do agree with you and I sure did....and you no doubt have read me talk about it. It's gone, but not forgotten.

Presently, on Ebay, an '89 guitar in pewter finish is being offered. There's a photo of the back of the neck you must have a look at. You can see how pronounced the taper is. That was the original concept and I believe it has been modified from that.

That was the original concept and I believe it has been modified from that. A '98 'generation one' just sold, and I do not believe the neck had the same degree of taper as its predecessor.
