Would it be sacrilegious to have the body routed and install a signature set of DiMarzio Andy Timmons pickups in a pre wired pickguard?

I am the original owner and would never sell it.

Well, if you're not bothered about the future value of the Strat, you can do what you like! Who cares what anyone else thinks?!

But as you're asking, I wouldn't! I have a refinished and modded Plus, and ideally I would've kept it standard. The difference was that it became unplayable and something HAD to be done. Some refinishing was necessary, so a good opportunity for a complete nitro paint job. I love it!

Yours, however, would be a re-rout just because you fancy different pickups. You may not even like them on the Clapton, when fitted! I've found the same pickups sound different on different Strats.

I'd rather buy another Strat with HSH or HSS rout and put the DiMarzio set on that. Or buy a body which'll take the Clapton neck etc?

That's my opinion, anyway! :)

Cheers - Peter.

I would not, but it is your guitar. You can do what you wish to and with it, this is America.

In the some states, there may be laws against that...

The question yet to be asked is what you hope the gain will be?

+1

Such a mod would be irreversible. Instead, buy yourself a builder guitar or sufficient parts to assemble same. A MIM Classic Series Strat would be a good starting point.

...And the 50's Classic has a very neck similar to the Clapton, just finished in poly vs. the satin lacquer.

As did the first generation Road Worn 50's, which had little or no finish.
