Hi, CHRIS921.
I'm starting to get the feeling you aren't yet quite clear in what you want, you just have a bad case of the common GAS for a new guitar.
Yep...that's what it looks like. We've all been there, and there's no shame in it. But the ONLY one that can cure that GAS is you (and your wallet).

Too bad the Arctic White MIM was sold...would have been the direction I would have went (if I didn't have one). I know exactly how that guitar feels, plays, and sounds because I have a 2012 in the same color, and a 2015 (same year as the one in the pic) in Candy Apple Red...they are my "go to's" for heavy (white) and clean (red). Both sound fantastic through tube and solid state amps...but that is MY ears and hands---you may differ as we all do.

The American HSS does not thrill ME, because I prefer maple vs. rosewood fretboards, and I already have an HSS that I pretty much never play because I also prefer SSS pickup configuration as well. You gotta ask yourself what are YOUR preferences in these categories as well as the list jmattis just left.
I DO like that black on white on black though...pretty darn sharp!

So; that puts me back to the Sunburst MIJ...and that guitar is horrifically modified (that locking nut should NOT be blocking the truss adjuster) and beat to hell. Irritates me that someone would allow a fine instrument to end up that way.

We're all newbies in some sector, so anything I wrote wasn't meant to be offensive.
It's just so much easier to answer 'what guitars would suit this style' than 'will I like this guitar'...

Thumbs up for that test and try method.

I assume you're in GB, Chris, in which case I have to say a monkey for a US American Standard, from a dealer, is very good indeed! Makes me wonder if it IS an AmStd? Not a Special (although it would still be a good price)? Or is it rough? Badly modded / needing a refret, or something...?

Good luck with the hunt anyway!

Cheers - Peter.

Well, yes, I guessed it was used, Chris - it's still a great price if it's any good, though! A couple of years ago I paid £625 for a 2006 AmStd, before the increase in prices for US stuff. OK, it was in fantastic condition and a bargain, but it was still 7 - 8 years old.

I'm also looking at the eBay ad for that MIJ duffer and I'm amazed it's already over £300!

Cheers - Peter.

The pics are on page 2 of this topic, and the ebay listing link here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-2009-American-Stratocaster-HSS-Black-Can-Deliver-/322348899103?hash=item4b0d7ddb1f:g:IKsAAOSwpLNX9-2T
It's a Stratocaster, it's an HSS with a vintage trem, and the serial number says Z8 (which would indicate US made and in 2008/2009), it's Tuxedo colored (black body, white pickguard, black pickups &knobs) and it should be nitro finished. And it's not an American Special (introduced in 2010), it's a Highway One. Been on sale on different sites at least from October - so there might still be some leeway on the price.
Looks as it should, looks original - but that's just an opinion.

Personally I do like HWY1's, but their voicing is closer to 'hotrodded' than 'vintage'. Would IMHO fit SRV style blues very well, on Roy Buchanan styles I might go for something softer.

On the MIJ, my very faint gut feeling (still based only on those pics on page one): I'd call it an MIJ ST-557 model from around '85 - and to me, the System1 trem plus its locking nut look original.

Agreed JM - now I realise it's the black Strat on the pics, the headstock gives it away. Didn't think it could've been an AmStd at that price (in GB). It's an average price for a Highway One over here. Unfortunately a lot of sellers just call them US Strats - very misleading if you're not totally clued up (and think you're buying an AmStd).

I wasn't familiar with this trem, so stand corrected, but surely no manufacturer would fit a locking nut like that...?!

Cheers - Peter.

Hmm...
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=67915
And, the yokochou brochures (bad resolution, though) show a similar ST-557 nut install on the '86 Twang mag.
Plus, the google is our friend (try e.g. 'st-557 stratocaster system 1').
(Truss rod access, hah - those days you set the truss rod once and let it be...)

This mid-eighties/Japan connection had some weird products coming out the factory, and a lot of details still remain unclear. Some call this model a Contemporary - but it doesn't fit any established model number exactly. It might just be an experiment, made by some bored factory worker.

On this particular MIJ on page 1: Haven't seen the original ad, so the authenticity is still unclear. It's rare, but not unique. Might be a diamond, might be rust. And those missing parts at least mean that there is a lot of work before the guitar is in top condition, at worst that buying substitute parts heaves the price substantially upwards (Stratconnection wants 25$ for one single intonation screw...).

See what you mean, JM, although the locking nut on the old thread you mention looks a bit better installed than the one on Chris921's post! That definitely looks like an effort by someone who doesn't really do DIY!

Whatever, it's well ugly, and I can see why most of the ST-557's I could find on Google have had it removed! Makes me wonder why they didn't just use a locking nut in the usual place. IE: Instead of the normal nut. In the 80's I had a US Peavey Falcon (bit of a Strat copy) with the Kahler locking nut in the 'right' place. The ST-557 nut looks like the Kahler? If so, it would presumably fit in the same place?

Still - as you say - that seems to be the way they did it...!

Cheers - Peter.
