With a budget of £500, I think you could do a *lot* better than that dog. It's got too many damn fleas for my liking.

Keep looking.

If it were me, I would take Arjays advice and move on from that beater. Find a 50's or 60's Classic series (MIM) new. They are very well built, great fit and finish, solid pickups and hardware, and on par quality wise with the lower end MIA guitars.

Find *the* guitar that speaks to you. Country of origin shouldn't even be a factor when considering an instrument. Does is look right? Does it feel right? Does it sound right? Those are the hallmarks of a "keeper". All else is merely fodder for a forum debate.

Mostly agreed, but there is one country that sticks out in a negative way, quality-wise. Where factories appear and disappear based on who bids for their work, and there is no permanence or tradition. A great shame, because it used to be the country with the most tradition. Now it's the country of quick money and no scruples.

If it sounds good and it's well-made (and MIM's get good reviews on here), you can't go wrong with a white Strat!

Cheers - Peter.

This one looks nice (and all legitimate).

How does it play and sound?

Hi, CHRIS921.
I'm starting to get the feeling you aren't yet quite clear in what you want, you just have a bad case of the common GAS for a new guitar.
The MIJ on the first page, the white MIM, the HSS and the 50's Classic Player - they're actually very different Strats.
Take a moment to think. You say you're upgrading from a Squier, so try to clear to yourself which way do you want to go.
Like:
- Looking for just better playability? (Often fixed with a full setup.)
- Want more crunch? (Something with Texas Special or Tex-Mex pickups might be the answer, or just upgrade the pups - besides, we haven't even started with your amps, pedals & other gear...)
- Want a more vintage sound? (Many MIJ's and MIM's to choose from...)
- Want versatility, one ring to rule them all -style? (Then think HSS, plus maybe wiring options.)
- Just want the Fender logo? (There are good Korean, Chinese options.)

For what it's worth (and especially since I understand you don't have a large guitar collection), I'd recommend getting a guitar that differs from your Squier. Doesn't even have to be a Strat, having a Jazzmaster or a Tele never hurts.
