Very good, and sought after in my area. Some people are paying/selling them anywhere from $600.00 to $800.00 in great shape. Condition is key, and usually a hardshell case is included with the ones I've seen listed.

Haven't checked Reverb or eBay to see the national average...mostly because I'm content without an MIJ in my collection...but I can see and understand why people are interested in them.

For a couple of years that weren't Fender's greatest, the CIJ/MIJ models were even considered better than the US models of the same years.

Just make sure you don't use a Philips head screwdriver on them. The Japanese cross-point screws are subtly different, and you can easily damage the screws by using a regular Philips head on them.

If you post some pics prior to purchase we'll be able to steer you around any shoals, sandbars or reefs.

No offence, but it looks a bit of a mess to me! Who fitted the locking nut - Blind Freddie?! I THINK I'm right in saying the aftermarket trem shouldn't be a 2-post, so the body's been drilled for that (as well as the nut). And what's that white bit on the back? Not pudding, surely?!

If I'm right, to put it back to standard would take some refinishing, which wouldn't be cheap. Of course, if you like it as it is, and it plays OK - well, who am I to comment?! :) Merry Christmas!

Cheers - Peter.

I can't speak about MIJ from the 80's, but I have a 1996 that I've had from brand new. Until recently I had another '96 that was the same age.

I like my MIJ a lot, feels good, good weight, good action. The only thing I'd like to change is upgrading the pickups.

Looking at the pic, that nut lock (or whatever it is) is a big red flag.

What are they asking for it?

a quick exchange calculation puts £200 = $250.

That might actually be a good deal, if it plays okay and you were planning to just play the hell out of it.

If you are looking to upgrade your primary guitar and have a bit of a bigger budget, myself I'd look for something a little newer with no issues.

have you played it? what do you think?

The (double) nut looks horrible, but it's probably as it was originally...
And that's not an aftermarket 2-post trem - the pic is a bit blurry, but to me it looks like a System 1. It's lacking parts in the picture - and if those parts are really missing, it's quite a job plus quite expensive to fix.
All Systems are tricky tremolos; not to play, but parts are hard to find and expensive, and just the fact that they are rare makes them more difficult to adjust than the everyday six screw or two post models.

The price is low (in my 'hood, a MIJ from the eighties easily sells for over 700 monetary units), so maybe the seller hasn't got the missing parts... Anyways, I wouldn't recommend this guitar for anyone who hasn't sufficient knowledge&skills to make it playable.

BTW, based on those two pics I won't yet take sides on the authenticity.

If the neck is straight, I'd have no problem paying $250.00 for that. A loaded pickgaurd runs almost $200.00 these days, so it's worth it.
First thing I'd do is take that ridiculous lock nut off, fill the holes (that shouldn't be there in the first place) with wood filler...and put a string tree on it. Just looking at that pisses me off.
Little cleaning, and tender loving care---and it's a pretty nice guitar.

Not sure if it's my eyes, the picture angle, or what...but the pickup covers look a LOT more aged than the knobs, and the knobs look a LOT more aged than the switch tip (which looks brand new). I'd have to atleast question that with the seller just to see how they answer. If I caught them lying to me, I'd scrape up another $150.00 or $200.00 and buy a nice used MIM off Craigslist.
