Mike T's Philosophy on Guitar Playing (since the thread is going in this direction =]:

Be original; don't be a follower

What I've been doing lately is intently studying the techniques (mainly, soloing techniques) of some of the popularly-held "Greatest Guitarists," starting with Slash, then Stevie Ray Vaughan, and currently Jimi Hendrix. If you look very closely, you'll see that all 3, despite their varying genres, utilize extremely similar techniques, but each is ever so slightly different. So, what I do is I take a "trick" and make it my own by ever so slightly changing it to fit my hands and my abilities, as Doc pointed out in the above post. If everyone's hands could do the same thing, there wouldn't be so many different ways of doing the same (or similar) thing. For example, Eddie Van Halen's tapping technique; he was inspired by some fancy pull-offs Jimmy Page was doing (think: the end of Page's main solo in Stairway to Heaven), but modified the technique to make it his own and suit his abilities.

Oftentimes, people will go to great lengths to try and "emulate" their main inspiration, which I'm not saying is an entirely bad thing, but why try to be someone else? All of us have done it (myself included). But what's the main thing that really makes these "famous" guitarists stand out? Why is it that when a song plays on the radio, we can identify the band as soon as the guitar starts playing? Because each of those guitarists has their own unique sound, one that no one else has. And that's what makes them who they are.

And of course, I speak with all the wisdom I've gathered at the venerable age of 18

.....and, if you've read any of Buddy Guy's interviews you will learn that he claims he was doing all of that tapping and playing behind the neck and who knows what years before Jimi and his producer, Leonard Chess, disuaded him from doing so to Leonard's great chagrin years later.

Buddy's 'thing' about going out into the audience was copped from T-Bone Walker who used to stroll through the audience at the end of a long cord.

Buddy admits to walking out into the street at the end of a 100' cord during one live gig.

Chuck Berry built his signature lick upon a classic slide riff that was a signature for Elmore James.

The Allman Brothers are noted for taking classic blues standards and re-arranging them. Among those which come to mind are: "Trouble No More",
"One Way Out", and "Statesboro Blues". You need to find the originals and compare them.

Santana's reworking of "Black Magic Woman" and "Eyes To The Blind" (which you will find on EC's Crossroads II) are other examples.

Often, the more things change. the more they remain the same.

Doc

Anyway that aside, all the old bluesmen borrowed from each other popular culture music was thin on the ground in them days, apparently. Lets face it though things havn't changed much. Led zep and sabbath wouldnt have carreers without 50's blues. Motorhead wouldnt be around without chuck berry (even lemmy would tell you that). These examples are extreme you could spend all day comparing modern R&B (which has no rhythm and hardly any blues) to the soul bands of the 60's and 70's minus the talent. immitation is the highest form of flattery so the saying goes. In some cases i think its the highest form of destruction. The real hero's are the ones who take an idea and expand it ala Berry. Even though you know where it came from its definatley all Chuck.

.....yes it is....and by dint of that it is also 'Fleetwood Mac's', two facts which not every listener is aware of. So if we lay that against your commentary, look at the musical direction that band took.

Spectacular.
