I'm beginning guitar student at 51 and don't know why I waited so long. But I'm the happy owner of a 05-06 MIM Brown Sunburst Strat and a Seagull Mini Jumbo acoustic.

One thing I noticed right from the start was that on the electric the G string would sustain longer and was louder than the other strings. This can be really terrible sounding at times. I understand that it may have something to do with the distance of the pickup pole to the string and that the problem comes from the design of the pickup going back to when G strings were wound not unwound.

Is there a fix for this. I fairly handy and (maybe) not too afraid of attempting the adjustment myself if it's simple enough.

Thanks.

Make sure the action of the strings are all consistent. What I mean by this is make sure all of the strings are at a relatively even height from the fretboard and that they follow the radius of the neck. The G-String on your guitar may be lower than the rest of the strings making it louder. I too have experienced this but it was a pretty easy fix. If this is not the problem then you're right it may be the pickups.

If the pickups in your Strat are original, you have that high G string pole piece and due to the construction of the pickups, the offending pole piece cannot be adjusted.

Your absolute, cheapest fix is to buy a wound G string as close to the same gauge as what your G string on there is now. Or, the next time you buy a set of strings for your Strat, tell them you want a set of the closest gauge you have now but which comes with a wound G.

I'm sure they are original. Checked string height and they are consistent. The G string pole on each pickup is higher than the others. I'll look for a set with a wound G although I hop I don't have to go too heavy - I use .009s.

Thanks guys. I can't believe I'm playing a Strat!

I use .009s myself. To the best of my knowledge, the thinnest wound string is an .018. Your present G string is .016. So, the difference would be negligible. Now in terms of sets that come with them, to the best of my knowledge, it would be a .010 gauge set.

Glad to help and glad you're playing a Strat. They've been my #1 guitar since 1968, read my signature!!

I found a similar symptom with my strings when they got old. Some of them sounded pretty dull. Also, my guitar was setup with the factory with some awkward string heights and this may be affecting you. If your guitar was bought used, maybe that string was the wrong gauge for the rest of the string set.

I have a new set of strings; I'll change the old ones out and see if that makes a difference.

New strings may help temporarily but this has nothing to do with pickup height. It has to do with the physics of guitar strings. An unwound G can't be stretched tight enough to get the proper harmonics because the vibrating mass is wrong. If your guitar has a serious problem with it a wound G may be the answer. Several manufacturers make electric strings this way, they're usually call jazz strings. You'll have to redo the intonation on at least the G if you switch to a wound.
