I have a natural ash Strat, white pickguard, 3 position switch that according to the serial number, dates it to 1976. When I pulled the neck on it to verify the date, there was nothing stamped on the heel, however, there is the remnants of a stamp on the neck that looks like "Experimental". Has anyone else ever heard or seen anything like this?

I've seen "EXP" on a few, but that normally indicates the piece to be "exported". Not familiar with the '76, pics may help those that are more experienced here.

Thank you GL. I will try to get some pictures tonight. Not sure how to post a pic, but I guess we'll worry about that when the time comes.[/img]

Okay, now you have to show us a picture of that "Experimental" stamp.

Here are some more questions about your '76: what codes are on the neck end? And on the pickups and the pots?

There are dates (usually a week number and a year code) on all of those parts.

I plan on a disassemble tonight for the photog session. As an update, I emailed Gruhn Guitars and got a response from "Keith" who told me it sounds like a normal production run of a 1976 Strat. I then replied to him, and asked him if he thought the experimental stamp was inconsequential, in which he replied (and I quote, exactly) Yes, I do !!!!
I also emailed Fender Consumer Relations, and aked them if they knew of any significance of this stamp. The reply from Fender was:
As far as what info we have available to us on the older vintage models, no significance that we can come up with.
Maybe the experiment was the stamp itself, not the neck.
Note to Fender, the stamp works.
There is no date code on the neck heel.
