if it doesnt fall out with the guitar upsidedown i'd say its not in there. its quite a coarse spring it would need hammering to get it to lock in to the threads. incidentaly thats not a good idea either. i tried using a spring from a ballpoint pen in my trem hole years ago (courtesy of misguided advice) and ruined the arm and socket at the same time. A cigarette paper (rizla etc) wrapped around the arm prior to fitting can help tighten up the arm but i've found that usually when most people look to tightening up the arm its already too late. The best tip is just not to overtighten the thing in the first place, remember where it sat when it was new and dont go past that point.

Will it hurt anything to not have it in there? I usually leave the trem a full turn from being tight. Thanks!

no it will operate fine without it. leaving the trem slightly loose is a good idea too. The trem socket will deteriorate over time though with good use dive bombing and suchlike. The strat trem design was thought up in the 50's that kind of playing wasn't a factor then. I get about 3-4 years hard use out of a trem block excessive use. If your after more of a hank marvin wobble your going to get longer life.
