Someone posted this online...guy tells me the serial number is E214644. Can anyone confirm what type this is? Thanks!

Okay, I thought I posted a picture but it didn't seem to work. Here's a link on Imgur for it...

At face value and only one pic an 82 (possibly but not sure ash) strat.
Having said that if it were ash I would have expected more gain showing on the upper part so the jury is out.. :D

21 frets and vintage frets narrows it down somewhat, but not completely.
Ask Fender customer relations what the serial number maps to.

The guitar seems to be a hardtail Strat from the mid/late '70s.

Looks like a Dan Smith hardtail to me.
Here's another post on the forum showing lots of pictures of another Dan Smith hardtail in black.

Hi all

Thanks for the informative input, John C and T2. I happen to own an 82/83 Strat as described, thought you might like to see some pictures. This is my only Strat. It's all stock, it plays beautifully and I wouldn't ever consider changing anything. I bought it in 1986 for £300 off a friend. The E2 serial number can refer to 1982 or 1983, in fact the neck stamp is Feb 1983: one of the last of its kind!

I have no clue. I checked with Fender customer service (he says he did also) and they say it's a Dan Smith, but their database only goes back to 1993 so I'm not sure if they're correct.

Looks like you're good to go if hardtails are your thing.
Weird cutout for the neck adj so maybe modified there for easier access
Any further diagnosis would require disassembly etc :D

One potential warning flag is that the intonation is maxed out. That can be necessary if putting really heavy strings on a guitar, but that doesn't look to be the case here. Another possible explanation is if the body doesn't match the neck.
If you buy it, you may want to have a luthier or good tech take a look. It may warrant a heel shim or in the worst case, moving the bridge.

The bridge looks pretty hard up against the scratch plate. It could be that it has slipped against the screw countersinks and a little pinch up or swap for the next size screw will sort the problem.

Apparently the owner never understood the purpose of split-post tuners.

I was thinking the same thing. I always hate when I see big long string ends hanging off and when they are split posts it is a WTF moment!
