In a previous post I was asked how well a guitar with the FreeFlyte tremolo stayed in tune. I experimented yesterday and came up with these results:

Using a 1983 Standard Strat, second version, with D'Addario Half Rounds (.010) which should have been changed ages ago, I tuned using a Seiko TOLV tuner and played for about ten minutes. Upon checking the tuning I found overall that the tuning became sharper by as much as 15 cents. I repeated the experiment and had the same results. I then played without using the tremolo and the guitar stayed in tune. I don't know if this is typical of tremolo systems but these are my results.

BTW, I bought this Strat in November of 1983 for $390.00 from Sam Ash in New York (mail order) w/a hard shell case.

Is the nut on the neck lubricated well enough to allow friction free slippage for the string when using the tremolo?
If not that can cause it to go out.
Are there locking tuners on that guitar?

Mmm. That's an interesting test. That vibrato was not very popular when it came out, which was why it lasted such a short time in the catalogue. But whether that unenthusiastic reception was because of inherent tuning problems, or just because it was too "untraditional" is not clear, all these years later. (We're a conservative minded lot on the whole; guitarists!)

One or two people might want to ask you further about it: there was interest in that previous thread, no doubt because that bridge is unfamiliar to most of us.

Thanks for that, 2strat!

Cheers - C

No locking tuners on that model (remember, its an '83 standard, which means "inexpensive"). Like I said in my previous post the strings needed changing a long time ago. I'll put on a new set, lubricate everything, and try again.

Thanks for replying to my comment (by making e thread out of it  )

but i think that you could get rid ogf the tuning problems by doing a new setup and ofcourse some new strings
thanks anyways :) !
