I have a Deluxe Roadhouse Strat and I'm trying to figure out what the v6 rotary switch *should* do... does anyone have documentation about what the different EQ settings mean at each position? It doesn't seem to be as simple as a digital tone knob, i.e. a gradual treble cut.

Also, there seems to be some confusion online about whether the "S1 switch" is really an S1 switch... that is, it's clear that it engages/disengages the pre-amp, but unclear whether it *only* engages/disengages the pre-amp or *also* does the series/parallel switching that the S1 does in the Am Deluxe's. The latter would be really odd, since you would only be able to get unamplified settings in the not-normal-strat wiring configuration.

Thanks!

If you are talking about the current model, here is a link to the Fender service manual - the service manuals are really a great source of information on individual models; besides the parts list they have wiring diagrams, switching diagrams, and starting with the new for 2016 models detailed neck specs. Here's the link:

http://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Origi ... 7-2016.pdf

Per the next-to-last page the S-1 switch only bypasses the preamp - when the switch is up the preamp is engaged, when it is pushed down it is bypassed. But they don't tell you what the 6 settings of that "V6 Rotary" switch are - so that is an area where Fender is falling down a bit.

If I'm remembering correctly the previous version of the Roadhouse had the same switching diagram - it appears Fender has pulled those from their webpage.

Fender doesn't do specific owner's manuals any more; they do a more-or-less generic one that covers most models. The exceptions being the American Vintage models that get reprints of their year-specific owner's manual (.i.e. the AV '65 Strat gets a reprint of the manual you got with a Strat in 1965, etc.).

Good find, thanks. That definitely clarifies things re: the S1 switch. I think they made a mistake calling this the "S1 switch", which to just about everyone now means "the series/parallel switch", but I guess they use it to mean "any button hiding inside the volume knob whose function may vary".

Re: the V6 knob, the manual (in an oddly informal twist for a Fender manual) says it provides settings from "Wiry Single-Coil to Scorching Lead". I need to know which setting is "Scorching Lead"!

Either way, lots of tone to explore on this guitar...

The product page calls them "mild to wild"; and the youtube vid below "thin to thick".
As I understand it, it's a PC Assy that tonewise does about the same as the old (Gibson) Varitone. For the usefulness, you just have to keep on experimenting.
One note, though; the V6 doesn't seem to be available as a replacement part...

Thanks, that video is really helpful. "Thin" to "thick" matches what I hear there, more or less a bass or low-mid boost.

It's not a "boost" in tone...it is a 'shift'. Your ears should pick up 6 different tones (one per position) running higher to lower. If it don't then either your ear or your rotary switch doesn't work. They are slight but very noticeable.
And the S1 is just as advertised...a true by-pass switch to the battery powered pre-amp. On or Off...those are your choices.

Best way to experiment with the rotary switch is to run clean through a tube amp...try each of the six rotary settings on all 5 of the pickup selector positions; you WILL hear distinctive differences in each individual combination (if the switch is working properly).

There IS a difference between 2015 and 2016 Deluxe Roadhouse's though. The pickups are no longer Texas Special's after 2015 I believe they are Vintage Noiseless in 2016...the fretboard radius went from 9.5 in 15' to 12 in 16', and the color options have changed (that beautiful buttery Vintage White you see in that video is no longer offered...I believe it's either Olympic or Arctic now with a tortoise instead of pearloid pickguard).

I found this looking around about the S1 switch

Deluxe Roadhouse Stratocaster

The S-1 switch built into the volume knob of the Deluxe Roadhouse Stratocaster bypasses the preamp.
When not in use, the S-1 switch doesn’t affect standard Stratocaster wiring, which is:
Position one: bridge pickup only
Position two: bridge and middle pickups wired in parallel
Position three: middle pickup only
Position four: middle and neck pickups wired in parallel
Position five: neck pickup only

The S-1 switch offers five additional pickup wiring options when engaged:
Position one: all three pickups wired in series
Position two: bridge and middle pickups wired in series
Position three: middle and neck pickups wired in series
Position four: bridge and neck pickups wired out of phase, with a special tone capacitor
Position five: bridge and middle pickups wired in series and out of phase, in parallel with neck pickup
