Hello All,

I was thinking of putting a P90 into an old Squire Strat of mine. Is the pickup rout deep enough? Any stories or pitfalls I should look out for?

Thank you!

I'm aiming for it to look something like this.

Measure both the depth of the pickup and your Squier's body *before* proceeding. It's possible you may have to do some chiseling for the bridge pickup location but make certain that your body can accommodate any increase to the depth of the rout.

+1 ...Measure Twice, cut once is the old adage and it is just plain true.

The routing depth is likely enough - a P-90 usually requires 0.75", and most strats should have that much already. The problem is that if you get a soapbar P-90, you likely have to wood mount it, which means extra depth for the screws.
A dog-ear one won't have that problem, but you'll have to do some inventive pickguard routing/drilling work.

But yeah, measure first.

One possible pitfall: depending on which model Squier you have, the body routings can be SSS, HSH, half-swimming-pool-plus-single - probably other possibilities, too.
Plus of course that pickguard.

You could also look at the Seymour Duncan Phat Cat. It's a P90 that drops into a standard humbucker mount with no modifications required. I have two in an Ibanez AR220 and I'm very happy with the result.

Love the P-90 sound.
My 2009 Squire Bullet came stock with SSS...but once I removed the pickgaurd, I was surprised that it was routed for HSS as well...and a P-90 would fit with no modifications to the body itself. If you want to upgrade the pots, you would have to route the bottom tone pot cavity (1 volume, 2 tones) further south to accommodate a larger pot.

Do it!

Pete Townshend had put a pair of P90s on one of his guitars.

One question I have for Fender, is why is the Mustang 90 only offered with a Rosewood fretboard? I like Maple fretboards, but I'd have to settle for the Mustang with pups (which is also not offered with a Rosewood fretboard) if I wanted one of these new Mustang's.
Seem's like this choice would isolate a certain amount of customers. If the Mustang 90 was offered with a Maple fretboard, I for one, would already have one.

P.S.- No; I'm not willing to buy a Mustang 90 and modify it with a Maple neck...nor buy a Mustang and modify it with P90's. So I recon I'm scat-outta-luck.

Fender won't answer questions here.

My guess is that the sales of Mustangs in general and 90s in particular was predicted to be low enough not to justify doubling the amount of factory cell switches. With rosewood being the most common Mustang fretboard, and what's associated with most famous Mustang players, that was likely the safe choice.

I'd agree. And it's probably a loss for P90 enthusiasts. On the face of it, the maple board would (perhaps) give that pickup a skosh more HF bite. But installed in a Strat, with its longer 25.5" scale, I think the P90 and a maple fretboard would sound real smooth.
