Hi there :)

First question: I busted the 2nd tone control trying to separate the parts that would allow the tone knob not to just spin  Is there anything special about that tone control replacement that I need to know? Recommendations?

Second: I can't seem to find information about getting a pickguard replacement in some other color than the tortuous shell. I guess I can drill one myself in anything, but wanted to check if there are any replacements that already have that hole.

Third: I'm up in the air about the humbucker in this set. Is there any reason I can't simply swap it out (the Fender one looks rather different. )

Thanks!

If you are unsure whether a humbucker can be replaced or not you may want to visit a guitar tech to address your issues.

What's the problem with it, then? Have you given it a few months? I find it takes me quite a while to decide (unless it's REALLY not right)!

If so, have you tried height / angle adjustment? Sometimes that can make all the difference...

Cheers - Peter.

Mmmm, speak much wisdom he does.

Hi Superstratlover and welcome to the forum. How did you break the tone control and what do you mean by separating the parts? The only part to separate is the knob and the easiest way to do that is with a cloth. There is quite a good video on the Fender University YouTube channel about swapping pick guards which you might find helpful.

Sometimes a picture is worth a 1000 words.......

I really didn't jam the screwdriver in too hard, really broke easily. The middle tone control allowed me to widen it and not have the spinning-endlessly knob. Bummer, but thank for the info. I just want to make sure I don't get the wrong pot.

Here is the rats ne.....I mean wiring that is stock with this model. As you can see, the bucker isn't like any that I've seen. As for the tone, it's ok and I do like with the "blower" engaged, but wanted to know. However, if not using the "blower" switch, it's pretty weak for a bucker output wise. Might have to do with that incredibly complex wiring setup.

Thanks for the info!

Wow!

Yes, that is Broke.

If you are ok with a soldering iron it is a easy fix, I would get genuine fender part, if there is not a shop near you that has them, order from the website. The service diagram shows a 250k pot.

https://p4.zdassets.com/hc/theme_assets ... 1_SISD.pdf

If you are not comfortable doing it yourself take it to a shop you trust.

You know what I was thinking, I could probably find a way to rig it with a piece of plastic on the correct side. Doesn't have to be flawless, just not an ugly sticking out thing.

Yeah, btw I think a fender pot is the way to go unless there is something so amazingly better.

It work only with knob using set screw ( telecaster knobs ) not with push-in knob.
New pot is the only way.

Well yes, you could. And back in the days when knotting strings (at one end or the other) was what we did - because we were all borassic - I'd do that with a carefully shaped piece of scrap plastic or wood. But nowadays? When a pot's only a few quid? Just buy one! :)

Still not sure what's wrong with the HB? But it's certainly a cats cradle under there and I've never been a fan of complicated Strats (even though I can wire one up)! Blower switch? Sounds more like something on a race car!

Cheers - Peter.

The first time I ever wired up one of those super-switches, (OK, the only time) it looked almost as bad as that.
My tone and my brain are both so much happier since I pulled that stupid thing out of there.

Yeah, I'll likely just replace it.

AT HB: "Wrong" is really not what I was thinking, but since it's a ra.....I mean complicated, I just wanted to ask as many questions as possible since all three are related. Thanks!

And that is kinda the reason I asked the 3 questions at once. There isn't anything "wrong" with it (it's very quiet, quieter than the EMG's I had in there for a while.....can't figure that out) but like the above post, I wanted to get as much info at one going as possible.

I do like the "blower" switch though (or whatever fender calls it)

The 'blower switch' in Fender lingo is 'passing lane'... All the power of the bridge humbucker straight to output jack, no vol or tone control.

I had some time to go a bit private investigator mode, so:

Those diagrams above don't fit your guitar, you have the model American Deluxe Strat(ocaster)® HSS, 011-9100-7XX (XX being the color code), and the correct diagram is the 2010 revision.
It's one of those diagrams that went missing (along with a lot of other Fender diagrams, all Squier diagrams and a lot of other valuable stuff) on the latest, gravely disappointing and totally disasterous website update.
But, the pickguard options you asked for are (Fender part number) 0077658000 (Mint Green) and 0078832000 (Black) - your stock one is 0078831000 ("Brown Shell", aka Tortoise).

You could (and should...) ask for the diagram via email ( consumerrelations@fender.com ), they most likely still have it.

The humbucker is part number 0054036000; "Fender Hot Rod Humbucker" with Trembucker (=wide) spacing. There's some controversy on if this actually is a renamed DH-1... Anyways, it's Alnico5, should measure about 16.5kΩ (but at angela.com they got only 7.85).
