I don't see anything obvious that might suggest it isn't real.

Best option is to contact Fender with the Serial Number.

It might well be the real deal.
Why is the "Fender" and Stratocaster" decal missing?

The missing decals in and of themselves would give me *serious* pause.

Who defaces a premium instrument in such a deliberate fashion?

Thank you all for your input!

The guitar is not mine but Im helping a friend out. They also run a pawnbroker/auction company and a customer want to put this guitar up for auction. My friend dont want to sell anything that might be a fake. The customer says he has inherited it and dont know anything about.

This and the missing decals do ring some bells for me. We checked it with the police and all but nothing has ome up.

If no one else says anything I gonne go with that its legit after all?

Once more thank you all.

Nothing like being asked to provide a free service in establishing a guitars legitimacy  but I appreciate your comments in "coming clean ".

With regard to the decal, as a vintage reproduction I believe the EC decals are applied after lacquering. These are then vulnerable, as were the originals, so I wouldn't necessarily be heart broken that it wasn't there... but it still raises questions.

The best option is to check the Serial Number with Fender.

Wouldn't a 98 year model have Noiseless pickups as well?
The Lace sensors may have still been optional, but I thought the Blackie changed pickups depending on the date made.

Hi John

I dont really se a problem with this, where is the problem? Its common elsewhere when it comes to art, jewelry, watches etc that people in auction houses & pawnbrokers etc discuss in open forums with other people that are intrested in these items. On a personal level I think its great cause there is so much knowledge out there and usually people think its just fun to share and discuss.

Its a pay of for both parties. Dealers make sure that fakes etc. are not put on the market and items that may be stolen are exposed.

On the other hand "common people" also pick up what to look for in genuine vs fake products. When it comes to watches for instance there is so much fakes out there and collectors and ordinary people like that we expose these with good pics and info about them so they dont get ripped of. Some dealers tend to stick with this information to themselves but I never hide anything and are happy to share any information I have.

So far me or my friend havent made a cent here, we just put in some time. And we may not even make a cent on it. Maybe the customer dont want anything besides a valuation of it (and for that we dont charge them anything).

I never hide why I want information, I could if I wanted to but I want to be honest with it. I do it so I can be fair with people I make business with. Also even if I wanted to pay for the information its no where I could get it here where Im at in Sweden. At least not without putting severel hours of travel into it. Thats why I think forums like this one and others are so great.

I hope this is ok with you, but of course you dont ahve to give me any information at all in the future. Its just something I would have to accept and its totally ok with me.

Thank you all for your input.

Best Regards
Henke

It's definitely a Clapton. That CE sticker on the neck plate means 'Clapton, Eric'. Doesn't it?

Cheers - Peter.

No.

CE stands for Conformité Européenne (European Conformity).

My bad, had to go look it up....2001 was the last year they shipped w/ Lace sensors. 2002 and later were Noiseless.
