My Japanese Stratocaster, not real sure of the year but I'm going with 1984. If anyone knows anything about these please chime in, it will be very much appreciated.

The serial number is E961937.

Fender's own information is a bit vague https://support.fender.com/hc/en-us/art ... ufactured-
The only way to be certain is to take it apart and look for date stamps on the neck and body.

Looks like the MIJ Standard of that era. Unless the guitar was brought into the USA from elsewhere it would have to be a 1985 - no MIJs with the "Fender" logo/brand were imported to the USA until after FMIC bought the company from CBS; all the MIJs imported to the USA during the CBS years (and that would only be say 1982-1984, the last of the CBS years) were under the "Squier" logo/brand.

I've taken it apart completely, no dates anywhere, handwritten or stamped.

No broken solder joints so I know the body is original, and of course the neck has the serial number so its original.

I just can't figure out why there's no dates, I guess I'll call it a 1985 model then.

Nahh, "mid-80's" is a lot better.

Didn't you find any stamps in the neck pocket; like ST-557 or such..?
(IMHO: No stamps is weird, but not alarming on a MIJ.)

jmattis, yes, come to think of it I did see a ST- something (can't remember the numbers) but they were on the bottom of the neck heel.

Stamps, scriblings, initials, dates etc. in the neck pocket and/or neck heel often tell a lot.
In MIJ Stratss, the ST plus numbers explains which model year specs the guitar is meant to resemble - remember, first Japanese Squiers and Fenders were "copies" of a certain year model. They were never officially called "reissues" but that's what those were de facto.

My GUESS for your guitar is there's a ST-62 stamp. That can vary a bit: can be SST, or 362, or have some letters added, and so on.
If the electronics are original, it should have a 3way switch, and most likely US pickups. It should have only one string tree, though, so some mods probably happened along the way.

A couple of general notes to anyone (= "you" below is generic):
a. If you disassemble a "mystery guitar", take good quality photos of everything that's usually hidden. Neck pocket, neck heel/end, pickups (all sides, stagger, wires...), pots, caps, switch, shielding etc; etc; etc.
b. Some people believe guitars should not be disassembled at all, or at least not more times than is absolutely necessary. Use your own judgement on this.

The neck appears to be missing the "Made in Japan" under Stratocaster. It looks like someone removed it by pressing the wood in a bit.

FWIW

Yeah the previous owner scratched it off with what looks like a utility knife/razor blade.

Definitely a candidate for the national douche museum.
