why does the volume increase on the pickups when you depress the S-1 switch. Every pickup position is louder. Hate to ask a stupid question but would really like to know why. Thanks! (The guitar in question is an American Deluxe Ash Strat)

So changing from parallel to series affects the output level?

I'm sure someone like Ceri could explain it in detail. I can't

To me that's a plus. When I'm on standard switching and then use the S switch to do a lead it not only warms it up but boosts it a tad too. It helps compensate for the perceived difference in not hearing a deeper tone as well.

OK that didn't make sense :?

I mean with less treble it isn't as audible in the mix as the more twangy/trebly sound. SO if it's a tad louder then good in my book.

BTW I play hard rock/metal.

hi Makinglemonade,
Mine is HSS...
Your guitar has S-S-S not H-S-S correct?

It's louder because the S switch changes the wiring to series (either with another pup or a special circuit). Series means there has to be 2 coils involved ( a single coil can't be ran in series because "series" is a relational term refering to a pickups wiring in relatonship to another pickup/s). Series produces more output and more bottom.

So when you engage the S switch, if you happen to be in position 1 it engages the middle pup too, but in series so it sounds more like a humbucking pickup and has more output.

every position in S mode is at least 2 or 3 pickups combined so you always have more output than in standard mode

I hope that made sense :?

Thank you shredhed,
I would like to comment on somthing else I took notice of while we are on this topic.
I did that thing where u bend a note & 'toggle' the pickup selector switch.
Image
Then slowly let the note drop in pitch as u release the bend & continue toggling it. (Hendrix does it in Voodoo Chile) anyway...
I noticed that when u switch the selector on a guitar with S-1 switching, it makes a clicking (almost popping) noise right as u switch from one pickup to the other.
(It's not very noticable actually, but it is louder of a switch over than the guitars I compared to it that had no S-1 Switching in them.)
Give it a try & a close comparison... u will see what I mean.

 Er, I wish. Unfortunately, electronics always makes my brain do a Homer Simpson. D'uh.

The best I can remember, when you connect in parallel, like a traditional Strat, some of the signal of one pickup is cancelled by the other. So you get the thinned out nasal "in-between" sound most of us love our Strats for.

Series connection gives less (or no?) cancellation so a warmer, rounder sound, like humbuckers, and also a bit more output.

Godda say, on my S1 Strat the volume difference is minimal, but I definitely prefer most of the "switch up" sounds: I only use the middle switch down setting occasionally.

Maybe this helps (though it did little for me... D'UH!):

I see wehat you mean. It really doesn't bother me though. I never switch all that much. I guess it's just the nature of the beast, something to do with it being series :?:

Maybe calling it a popping sound is a bad description.
I compared my HSS (with S-1 switching) to a strat without it (HSS standard Sienna).
What I mean to say is I can hear the pickup switch a little more
than on the guitar with S-1. Its NOT an obvious difference...
At first the sales person couldn't hear the difference either.
But I did it 2 more times & he was able to distinguish it better.
I'm guessing it might be related to the 'in series' wiring.
I can't recall if it is when I have the S-1 switch down or not...
I will test it more when I actually get the guitar. (next weekend)

I prefer the warmer tones you get with the S-1 Switch in the down position, on the Deluxe.

I have a HSS strat (MIM), and I know for sure, that when I go to the bridge pickup (humbucker), I have a huge increase in volume. I always have to turn the volume switch down, so people are not blasted, when I go to the bridge puckup.
