I know that there is alot of passion about this topic but, I just have a few Qs. First Ive never built my own guitar well, im not really building as much as I am assembling it. Ive been collecting parts for awhile now and the list is as follows. 54 reissue MIJ body, 2002 MIA neck maple with rosewood and I have a fully loaded MIM pick guard in white. Im going to strip the body which is a 3 tone burst and paint it black but, I think that Im going to put different electronics in the pick guard (all fender) any suggestions? Also should I put a vintage style trem in or an American std trem? And the final one When this is all put togeather Im thinking about sanding the serial number of the neck just in case that I sell the guitar later no one can pass it off as a MIA Strat. Any comments or concerns? thanks

its a shame you cant determine the serial no' of the guitar the body came off and stamp it just underneath the trem cavity so its on display but not too obtrusive. seems a better idea than sanding the serial no' off the neck. pickups are very speculative depending on what styles you play. Personaly i like a good allround guitar and so try and go for quality stock pickups, rather than flavoured ones.

Well, if that's a pre-owned body then its pre-existing tremolo fixing holes will dictate to you whether it is to be a vintage six-screw bridge or a modern two-point one. It is perfectly possible to convert the former to the latter, and I can point you towards vast posts on this Forum (by me) that explain how to do it. But I'd strongly advise against going that route if you can live with what you've already got.

Whether six-screw or two-point, you can get bridges with almost any configuration of saddles, plate and block to suit your needs. The choice must be yours.

If you want different pickups but want to stay Fender, then myself I'd go for SCNs or Texas Specials. But that's an even more personal matter.

Far as the serial number is concerned, then if it is a genuine Fender neck that number belongs to it and is perfectly kosher. Mr dna9656 has previously quite reasonably bemoaned that Fender necks are not intrinsically linked by serial number to their bodies - but still, that's the way it is. So no need to lose it, though removing the entire logo and refinishing is also an honorable way to go.

Good luck - let us know how you get on!

- C

Hey, congrats .. I am also working on an american strat project I already have the body a nice 08 american neck and a new 08 american bridge which I'm going to install onto a nice 3.8 alder mexican body yes mexican!! I love it so much and its brand new :P I think it will end up great however I was thinking.... if for some reason I dont like the american bridge I will sell it and definately buy the Super Vee bridge that, for some reason, seems to be the best of the best... for the pickups.. I have a set of EMG SA's and also a set of EMG S's and I also have a set of EMG S-S-81 so I don't know which one I'll end up using but it's definately gonna be one of them since I am an EMG guy... hopefully my schaller locking tuners will arrive in a few minutes haha and I'll take a pic to show what it will be looking like ........ :D

The battery? well the battery fits perfectly well inside the body under the pickguard I have EMG's on all my guitars.....the "fender like" ones (and one other reverse headstock fender that I own) have the battery sitting under the pickguard and I have had no problem with them at all ... I also have the emg david gilmour set on my reverse headstock strat its a sweet set ! :P by the way my schaller tuners just arrived :P

That's what I'm thinkin' bout doing...I really don't wanna have to have the body routed for a battery slot...how often do you have to change the battery on the Gilmour set?

Well on the guitar that I use the most I change the battery every 6 monhts on average... however since I have other guitars I can't really give an accurate calculation ... the gilmour set I bought in april and so far I didn't need to change the battery for it ..... but I know that since it has the two extra circuits the battery will only run for around 300 hours... So as long as you unplug the cable from the guitar whenever you aren't playing it will last a good time .. ..

That's what I was hoping, thanks for clearin' that up for me =]
On the site, they said the battery lasts 500hrs, but the place that sold it to me (Guitar Center, no less) told me 10hrs...
