I've always been able to do the set up my own guitars the way I want, change pickups, etc,. but when it comes to leveling frets or filing nut blanks I won't go there. I was lucky enough to find an older gentleman who lives near me who retired from the Gibson factory in 2004 after 26 years on the final assembly point. He did it better (and for less money) than any of than any of the regular music stores in my area. He's my go-to guy from now on for anything I can't do.

I come from the DIY school of thought for most guitar tech stuff. Really the only thing I wouldn't touch would be frets and anything that might lead to a really expensive repair fee.

If it can be adjusted, and you don't like the results, adjust it back to where it was and try something else. It's extremely important to know how to adjust/repair your guitar. If you're on the road and something happens and time is a factor, DIY maybe all you have. And that usually isn't the time to learn about the inner workings of your gear.

Good Luck and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.

I bought a used Hwy1 Strat and couldn't get it to sound right. I thought maybe I had made a mistake in buying it. Had a tech give it new strings and set it up. I couldn't believe the difference. Now it's my go to guitar. Money well invested.
