I've had my Strat for four months and just took it in to get it set up. I wanted to go from .009 strings to .010 strings, and this was a good opportunity to have a pro do the setup.

This was the best $40 I've spent on music. He did a great job and set it up for the type of music I play. I can really feel the difference.

My son doesn't think his needs to be setup, but I'm going to convince him otherwise and I think he'll be happy with the results too.

I made an earlier post on changing from .009 to .010 and my reason was that I think that the high E, and the B strings that come with the guitar from the factory sound too much like a mosquito buzz for me. Switching to .010 D'Addario strings made all the difference in the world. It sounds much better now, and the strings are not significantly more difficult to bend.

A good tech is worth his weight in gold.

Finding a good tech - rather than some stupid little kid who thinks he knows how to tinker with guitars - now that's the challenge.

I absolutely agree with you. I have found a Fender certified tech here in town that really knows his stuff and is willing to share information with you.

I was recently in a guitar shop (surprise) and a customer was consulting the kids behind the counter over his mid-range Ovation acoustic. He wanted the bridge lowered, and perhaps the nut taken down a tad, if the tech thought it appropriate. The kid scribbled a few notes.

After the customer had left I listened with half an ear as one spotty saleserson asked the other, "how do we do all that, then?" "Dunno, look it up on the internet. Bound to be something."

With mounting shock I realised these children were planning to attempt that job themselves, rather than pass it along to a proper tech.

The customer was gone: what was I to do? Wrestle the lads to the floor and carry out a citizen's arrest?

"Judge, your honor, I had reason to believe the youths in question were conspiring to carry out an unqualified bridge adjustment..."

Shamefully, I left that guitar to their un-tender mercies. Maybe it survived...

The moral: interview your techs with care, gentlemen.

Its a scary situation , you should actually know the tech. talk to him in person and know at least a little bit of what you are asking him to do.

I can't believe they were going to the internet for instructions, poor man.

I take it is was a little late to run after the customer to tell him of the evil plan the salesperson had. As a new guitar buyer/player I interviewed the tech before I decided to buy. Part of the sale was a free set up. He worked with me a quite a bit to get it right for me. Needless to say I was extremely impressed and he hasn't disappointed since.

I refuse to leave my guitar(s) in the care of anybody my age or younger (I'm 18) unless they have proven their worth to me in some way (in relation to the guy leavin' his with "kids").

im handy on set ups but there's one thing i dont touch this being frets. Theres 2 people i use for them, one in coventry who worked on patrick eggle guitars before he sold up and one in south brum. Both proved emselves by letting me play guitars they have built. If for some reason i couldnt employ their services and had to find someone else i would atleast want to see some proof of their work be it a build or a setup they had performed for someone else.

If you can't do it yourself it best to find who can. Much is by word of mouth on who are the good local techs many have so much work that they may even show you a trick or too of theres so you can do some things youself. I took a guitar building class many years ago were they supplied all the parts and tools needed and you built a guitar. I did both a acoustic and a solid body class.

For anyone interested RudyH's original post can be veiwed here:

RudyH, Do u really think it was the strings that made the major difference in sound?
Or might it have been some other adjustments?
Did he change your pickup height or somthing else maybe?

See my comment under post "SH-4 JB". Seems we are of the same mind in this.

Ah, indeed.

But what are the ethics of doing the opposite? Hated what might have become of that customer's acoustic, but on the other hand it looked like the music shop in question was close to the edge.

Name and shame? Moral dilemma... :?

There is certainly no question of the lack of ethics in the example you cited. In that 'caveat emptor' operates in the market place, and there is no oversight.....well.....consider the mortgage mess in the US and presently the world financial market as a result.

Need I say more?
