Doc
Im not at all opposed to the Hot Rod Im just not to crazy about the Dimarzio Pickup.I suppose if it looked like a regular single coil I would be allright with it but part of my quest if you will is an old school look as well. But if you recommend it highly then it is certainly worth consideration and I guess I can just swap the pickup out.
Somewhere in this mess of threads is a recommendation of mine for Fender to have a product line entitled....."minus one".
Frin'stance: I would have that neck on any guitar they build because their highly touted 'modern C-shape' is not for me.

You have two SCN's in that guitar and can do anything else you like with it. But the playability of it should be your first interest. Find one to audition and let us know what you think.

Personally, I try to avoid buying "Signature" models; it makes me feel like a wanna-be or a follower... I mean, no two people are alike, so why would two people play the exact same guitar / set-up? And, if you're gonna modify it anyway, why drop $1500 for a guitar, just because it has someone's name on it? I would go with the reissue and then modify it to your own preferences.

No offense to those who do have signature models. Just my personal opinion / mindset. =]

This seems to be what the direction is. The search is for a vibe, and finding the best pathway. There's been a bit of discussion around the various posts with regard to 'vintage' recently, particularly with respect to guitar neck tint. I expressed to him that what Fender is passing off as 'vintage' on that model is darker that what those of us who have hands on experience with that era know to be true.

I suggested the '57 Hotrod as a jump off point for him. I think the neck is terrific and would like to see that elsewhere other than exclusive to that mode. He can do anything he wants with that guitar from that point onward.

I still suspect, and will continue to do so until authoritative sources prove me wrong that they took it from the old Blackie.

Doc i've been paying a lot of thought to that idea of the neck similarities. I can tell you i've noticed certain changes in my playing style whilst i've concentrated on playing my hotrod for the last month. Notably my looser hand technique particularly with vibrato and slides, the neck seems to encourage both in bounds. Usually i leave fingerprints in the fretboard im so tense. Not lately though the playability of the neck is astoundingly relaxed. Seems strange to mr that it brings out clapton like qualities in my playing when i haven't listened to any clapton in 21 years.

At your leisure.

When I receive my recently purchased '89 Clapton, I'll give you some thoughts on the neck in the light of our discussion in this regard.

Well Doc I've recently returned from my travels to Sam Ash and they have the '57 Hot Rod. That is the nicest neck I have played yet.Feels alot like the neck on my '02 Highway 1 which I like the most. They also had a custom shop '93 Reissue of a'54 which I guess is a "c" shape neck which I wasn't crazy about. It did not seem as thick as the '62 reissue though.Like I mentioned elsewhere here I tried alot of different Strats in the past few weeks and the Clapton neck was the most comfortable, next to the Hot Rod.Im not crazy about that bridge pup but it looks nicer in person. Congrats on the 89 EC,and keep us posted on that :D

i bought a '62 reissue in oly white like 9 months ago and i love it

i know its not '57...and that neck is divine on the '57 but the rosewood neck with the oly white body and mint pickguard is serious!!

here is my take for what its worth...the artists themselves didnt use signature models...they used whatever they had available and made them signature models...

taking that philosophy...everyone of this generation should be running out getting the new american standards...they will be the re-issues of tomorrow...

not to sound like a complete hypocrite because i own a re-issue...let me say this...the re-issue appealed to me because i love classic rock...i love that 50's, 60's sound...the idea of getting something that was sold decades ago appeals to me because in effect i am giving myself the same sound that shaped rock and roll!

in terms of modifying a re-issue...to each his own...or her own...but their is a charm to something sounding a bit vintage...

i dont know about mojo or anything because technically every model after the '57 and '62 are just improvements on the original...but i feel as though today...with mass production and the ever present quest for a cheaper bottom line...we are missing out on a sort of old world craftsmanship that in my opinion these AV re-issue guitar posses...

when i think of rock...hell Fender in general my first thoughts turn to old strats...and there in lies the attraction...these are based on the archetypes and thus should be celebrated...sig models to me are a waste of time...not that they dont sound great and arent painstakingly made, just that i will never be Clapton, or SRV...just me...so why not celebrate that while still paying homage to the road that they paved?

Well Im not crazy about owning sig. models either and would only have liked to get the "Blackie" tribute just to collect but Im with jarabolos on his feeling about the AV reissues.I kinda like the idea of having something old school, and I would not modify a Reissue but like you said to each his own.
P.S jarabolos I see your from New Haven I live in Clinton just down I95 a few miles, small world huh?
