While I would have loved to have purchased the Blackie replica I was wondering how off the mark the '57 reissue was to Erics original. Any thoughts or inputs?

Personally, I try to avoid buying "Signature" models; it makes me feel like a wanna-be or a follower... I mean, no two people are alike, so why would two people play the exact same guitar / set-up? And, if you're gonna modify it anyway, why drop $1500 for a guitar, just because it has someone's name on it? I would go with the reissue and then modify it to your own preferences.

No offense to those who do have signature models. Just my personal opinion / mindset. =]

1st of all...
I totally DiSagree with you MikeT239 lol.
Signature models should not make u feel like u are 'following'.
I recorded a couple tracks with my borthers' SRV sig & I really really love that guitar. We cranked it through a bluesJr, no pedals or nothing (other than Wah). It screamed! Awsome guitar. As far as signiture models go... have no shame... these guys dredged themselves through dungeons of music history to make their mark. It only makes sense that u should feel no shame using a sig model from an artist who has inspired u, esp if the inst suits u.

2nd OF ALL!

I totally AGREE with MikeT239. LOL!

Sorry MikeT239 I was just tryin to give u a hard time LoL.

I am going to buy an Ibanez JS1000 (satriani sig model)
after I pay my two new strats off. But I am not going to modify
that guitar at all. I like it exactly the way it is.
Good Post Dewie69

I feel the same way about signature guitars. Im not all to crazy about having someones name on my guitar. And Im more intrested in the Blackie of old then I am with the new modified refined model of today.I do plan on getting the '57 reissue but would probably not modify it.Thats why I would get the reissue.I have a Highway One Im planning on modding

No worries, man =]

I did actually purchase the David Gilmour Signature pre-wired pup set (DG20); however, I plan on making some minor changes to the cosmetics and perhaps play wih the wiring in the future (being able to run all 3 at the same time would be very fun). I just like to put a personal touch to my gear to kind of "separate" myself form the crowd. I'm just saying don't try to completely emulate someone else, don't try and "copy" someone else's sound (I mean for extended use; I have searched for the SRV tone for my covers, but I play with different settings for own use); be yourself. If the "pros" use it, then chances are it's good, but not everything works for everybody. If it did, there would only be one type of guitar, you know? The beauty of having so many guitars, parts, etc. available is that you can personalize your gear to truly make it your own. Although, I must admit, I love the V-neck on the Clapton Sig, but you can always get a replacement neck, if you really want it that badly.

Sometimes, it proves to cheaper to buy the "cheaper" model and then upgrade form there, which is what I did to my MIA; I really liked the look of the AV '62, so I found an Olympic white MIA for $680, got the pickguard, aged knobs, and a set of TX pups for extra bite. If I stood a '62 side-by-side with mine, the only visible difference is the bridge.

So yeah, I'm not saying it's bad to get a Signature model and you're being a copycat or whatever, I just like to take what I have and give it a tweak, which I greatly encourage. Be creative =]

PS- I love those Texas Specials (pups) in the SRV Sig; I have a set in my MIA =]

It would depend...I like to play "dress-up" and screw around with the pickguard, knobs, etc. If I was shootin' for a particular sound, I might swap out the pups. But, if I bought a AV '57, I wouldn't play with the electronics too much...if I was gonna do that, I would find a cheaper model and go from there (like I'm doing with my MIM CP '50s). Personally, I haven't played the '57, so I don't know what all I may or may not do...

Hi Ceri!

It's lunchtime over here, and I am happy to save you from a terrible meal!!

Obviously no one has responded to the intial inquiry. The '57 reissue is just that...an RI of the '57 guitar.

The "Blackie Tribute" is a dimed copy of Eric's '57 mongrel in the condition it was left in when retired. The neck profile in this case would not be the same as the '57 RI because the neck on Eric's was worn from years of playing and the reason for the development of what came to be known as the 'first of the Signature Series guitars was that the neck could not stand another refret and Eric was seeking a new guitar with the same vibe but with more bang. Hence, the Lace Sensors and the 24db preamp in the first generation instrument.

My guess is that Fender 'diddles' with these V-necks a bit. They have what I call a 'generic' V. I can't vouch that the RI has the same profile as the 'original' '57. My '58's neck was more like the V-neck you'll find on...let's say.....the American Deluxe. The Artist Series Clapton is supposed to be a 'tad' slimmer but the guitar the CS built for me, which was to start out on the Clapton platform did not have precisely the same taper as my '93.

I have also been given to understand that the CS Artist Clapton's neck may be a bit closer to the stage guitar than the factory Arist Clapton.

The only person close to us who owns exactly what Eric presently plays is AlainLaFrance. Some years back the CS filled an order for 3 'as made for' Clapton guitars, one of which he was fortunate to acquire.

They refused to honor such an order due to what they call 'contractual' commitments. I tried place it when Alain gave me the heads up on his acquisition.

I have speculated that the '57 Hotrod's neck may be based on the Tribute Guitar's. There has been such a great feedback in this forum from players who have acquired that guitar that I would strongly urge the individual who posted the question to audition the '57 Hotrod. I have played it and, if one is a fan of V-necks, this is definitely a guitar to consider. It is a very comfortable instrument to play.

Have a great evening and weekend Ceri, I've more of my day to plow through before I'm done.

.....and thanks to the questioner for this one.

Doc.

Phew! That's preserved my dietary constraints, so's I won't have to visit my other doctor over my innards, today, at least. Thanks, Doc!

I've some more questions for you concerning your thoughts on vee necks: we'll come back to that sometime, hopefully.

All the best to you

- C

(Edited for dumb typo - c'mon, Ceri!)
