The only used MIM Strats worth that kind of money are the Classic Series models (50's, 60's, 70's) and perhaps a few of the artist signature instruments. The pre-owned garden-variety MIM Standard guitars can be had for as little as $200 or $250 on C/L and Ebay.

Walk away. They're great guitars, and a good choice but the going price for used ones in great or excellent shape is around $300-$350 from Guitar Center, and even less on the private market.
