So I bought a fender american standard strat, and I noticed a spot in the paint. Should return it or just keep it? What would you do?

Picture may help, but I'll return it.

It will eat at you every time you pick it up.
And not returning it signals to Fender that it's okay to lower quality control, hurting all of us.

Return it, no question. You've paid for a new guitar in what should be perfect condition.

Cheers - Peter.

Well, how does it play and sound to you? Its a musical "instrument", and is meant to be played and it will eventually going to get dinged up, road worn over time. If it sounds and plays great to you, then I would keep it.

Good point - let's have a look at it...!

Although if it annoys YOU, it'll always do so...

Cheers - Peter.

A very fair point. However, guitars are a very personal thing. If you have bonded with the guitar and like everything about it (aside the almost unnoticeable paint blemish) who is to say a replacement will feel/sound the same. Perhaps the replacement will also have a blemish of some sort - perhaps worse but you then can't be bothered to send another one back.

And, by far, the best thing about a guitar already having a blemish is you won't be reduced to tears the first time you knock it...which you will. And if you don't you aren't using it enough.

I don't know about this one, for the American Standard Strat I bought new almost 4 years ago now, (more than not my go to guitar), has not one blemish, scratch, nick, buckle rash, on it what so ever and I use it about 1.5 to 2 hours every night. I am just careful and aware of my surroundings, than I wipe it down, and put it in its case when finished. Now that I jinxed myself, lets see, but if it were to happen I would call it a battle scar, and hopefully not cry, as it is just a guitar
mud

FYI - The OP ran the same thread (with photos of the small dark spot) over on Strat-Talk, and posted yesterday that he returned the Strat to Guitar Center and swapped it on a Les Paul. After that one-sentence post (and he never even said what kind of LP he got) he stopped posting over there.

I doubt he remembers he posted on the Strat's finish flaw here as well.

I have been playing fenders for over 20 years and i have never ever purchased a new guitar. The reason is i like to hear the instrument played before i buy it. So i know the seller is more aggressive then I would be playing a brand new guitar. I lied i did buy a brand new acoustic.. let me tell you the story. Kids were young and i was playing my Martin in my home office. Wife yelled frantically about our son. I put the guitar on there floor not the stand. As i re entered my office at 1;30 am with my 3 year old sick in my arms. Tired i stepped through the guitar. Complete loss. My friends (band mates and fellow carpenters) decided they wanted to buy me a new one. We went to a close bye guitar center i went into acoustic room blindfolded. The first guitar they gave me was a 3800$ gibson. I said it sounded horrible and put it back. This went on for 5 hours. (With a couple breaks to take some vintage gear off the high wall and play. Anyway I whittled the entire room down to 2 guitars and i could not decide which. The two ended up being an 800$ martin and 450$ fender with the a beautiful body (remember im a carpenter). I am also scottish on my mothers side and we tend to be a bit frugal. I bought the fender and i play it every day. 6 years now. Sounds better every day. So what im saying is find the soul of that guitar So its not perfect but its almost the season when herbie wants it be a dentist. I have banged up more guitars then i can imagine. Some of them even sound better now. You have to find the sweet spot. It is not about the appearance. It all about the sound and they way you let that guitars soul out.
