Can anyone help me find out more information about my Fender Custom Shop Sunburst Moto Set?

I found a bunch of info about the white version - but I can't find much anything about a sunburst, apart from one old thread from 2008.

I have a pretty good collection, and this is without a doubt the best guitar I have ever played! Amazing action, and the matched tube amp has an amazing tone.

Specifically, some of my questions are; who built it? Is it one of a kind? What might a set like this be worth?

Would the Fender Custom Shop guys know its origins?

Well that's gotta be rare.
You could try emailing fender at consumerrelations@fender.com but even they may not be able to provide info since the shop is in a different place than where you question will go i.e. corona rather than scottsdale :D

I sent an email to the consumer relations folks, let's see if they respond.

I know that the Custom Shop has records on many (if not all?) of the guitars they produced.

So here is the reply from Fender. Looks like maybe just one was made:

Hi John,

So the serial does come up as a Custom Shop set but we no longer have the records on that model. It was completed in 1999 and previous to 2002 we kept those records in filing cabinets and did not digitize them for custom orders or limited editions, only for catalog models. So basically we can tell that the build was a custom job from 1999 but we don't have the exact specs of the guitar.

I'd normally consider such a finish to be a bit Bling but that looks rather classy. And, being confirmed as a 1999 Custom Shop set, probably quite valuable.

Without someone now recognising the set it is a bit disappointing we won't get to know why it was commissioned. I'm assuming it was for an individual rather than a company or organisation being that it isnt otherwise branded. Perhaps my all time favourite are the Jaguar Strats.

First he says that they did keep records in filing cabinets, and then he says they don't have the specs. Does that mean that they destroyed the records, or that they won't bother looking through physical paper records?

I think "kept" is perhaps a clue here.

Like at many places, some worker will give you these specs some will say they don't have them.

Who know about Fender ?

I have only seen a set like this once before and that was a promotional set in white moto. It was a display item at the Musik Messe in Frankfort Germany back in '96 or so. IIRC the guys from Fender we talked to at the time said it was to show the Custom Shops capabilities, don't remember if it had a serial number or not, but is was the same type of Guitar and Amp set.

FWIW

I saw set #003 at the Guitar Circus in Tucson about twelve years ago. It was in white mother-of-toilet-seat and they got it from the GC in Hollywood where it had never sold. Nobody in Arizona seemed interested in it and it was ultimately broomed off to another GC back east.

There was a production run of white Moto Sets somewhat similar to this. They were supposed to make 250 of them, but I heard that they stopped (ran out of materials or something) after building around 125 of them.

This appears to be a different beast. I guess the evidence at this point is that there may have only been one of them ever produced - probably a special order.

I am not a fan of the white models. But this guitar has a deep sunburst that is really gorgeous, It clearly took many hours to create this finish - I imagine that it would been quite a bit more difficult to create a sunburst than a single color. This one is really one of the most beautiful guitars I have ever seen.

I have several friends who are professional guitar players who say it is also one of the best playing guitars they have ever played. Incredible action and amazing tone. So clearly there were some top quality materials and electronics used.

So this is definitely a special guitar - and not part of the larger white moto set production run.

I wish I could find out which luthier at the Custom Shop built it, and who it was built for! Somebody on this forum must know - or know who to ask to find out.
