Recently at a major chain I found a "Player" Strat that I really liked. The salesperson let me noodle a while and answered my questions, but then tried (gently) to steer me toward an American Standard, which of course cost more money. One of his selling points was that the MIA Strat had a hand-rolled fingerboard. I will admit the neck had a nice smooth feel to it, but it didn't seem noticably better than the MIM I had just played.

It was hard to make a direct comparison, because the MIM had a rosewood fingerboard, and the American was maple.

Does a hand-rolled chamfer really make all that much difference, or is it just a way to sell a more expensive guitar?

the best way to do it is just play the guitar, thats going to provide the most comfortable rounding. For that reason alone i wouldnt pick a guitar because it had a pre-rolled neck.

I'm new to Fender so forgive my ignorance

But My MIA Deluxe has the "hand rolled" edges and I can tell you it makes a difference to me. In Fact coming from a guy who's played cheaper imports all my life I can say that Fender makes a mean guitar.

On the MIM necks, I have a question though. I read on Wiki that the MIM necks are made in Corona and sent down to Mexico.

Do they not roll the boards on those?

No, the "hand rolled" edjes are exclusive to the American Strats

Where, where - which other forums? Tell us, then we can all go round and pay them a visit...

Meanwhile:

One of the great attractions of old guitars is that the edges of their fingerboards are rounded by wear, which many people believe makes them more comfortable.

Far as I'm aware, the rolled egdes on American Strats are simply intended to emulate that feel. It certainly works for me.

A more luthier type approach to the same thing is done by James Tyler on his "super-strats". He rounds out the fingerboard edges, but only between the frets, rather than along the length of the neck, so keeping the tops of the frets flat closer to their ends. Don't own one, but from trying one out I say: LOVE that neck, HATE that headstock...

Cheers - C

Fenders are the best I've ever played. People have preferences, but I mean just the way my Fender was made. It's like it was made for me. I never owned a Gibby but I've tried them at GC and various places. The quality is mediocre to say the least. Not saying there aren't "gems" out there. But my point is that with a Fender they are more consistant and to me just a better value.

In my case, an American Deluxe, there is a more custom approach, meaning they take more time and do things that aren't in the more mass produced lines. Take for instance the nut. On mine the high E is where it's supposed to be, but the B nut slot it is over a hair (away from the E) giving my 3rd finger more room when I play an open D chord. I smashed the tip that finger when I was a teenager and it kinda wide at the end. B string spacing has always been a problem for me ever since. But on this Strat the nut was slotted by hand instead of a preslotted mass produced one to where the guy doing the nut either had that problem himself or it's a common tweek that many Strat players like.

Either way I could tell that someone spent a little extra time making a custom nut for it. Everything about this guitar has been well thought out.

(Sorry for the hijack - you may resume the thread now..... )

Great point! I agree 100%, My American Deluxe felt better to me the the American Standards I played and it felt like someone took a little extra time and really got all the little things right. I have owned about everything in my 40 years of playing and I've found Fenders, especially the later models, to be the most consistant in terms of quality and sound. Ther's a reason there the most popular guitar in the world and the most coppied. Keep up the good work Fender, the one you made for me is the guitar I looked my whole life for.
