I'm new here so I've been looking at many (if not all) of the threads on this forum.

From reading a lot of these forums I get the expression that MIM strats are actually quite good strats.

I've been playing for 5 + years but I've been playing classical and acoustic for most of that time but also play my dad's squier; which i find has a lot of fret buzz. SO I'm looking for a new electric guitar; most of you guys can relate to me when I say I would prefer and would like a strat.

I've been researching and playing a lot of strats and I love the new american standard but haven't come across a MIM standard strat as of yet. I know you can modify MIM strats (as you can all strats) so I'm leaning towards getting a MIM strat keeping it stock for a couple of years and then changing the pickups to 69's.

I also like the MIM deluxe players strat (especially the finish and vintage noisless pickups).

What's your opinion on this? In the future (when/or if I start to gig) would i have to sell the MIM to get an american? Or is the MIM that good?

Thanks

By the way; I play classical rock, blues and a bit of modern rock. My favourite bands (as you can see by my username) are Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Hendrix, Dire Straits, The Who, plus a lot lot more!

I wouldn't see any problem gigging with a Mexican Strat. I have 3 of them and I play them more than my $2K Les Paul. Granted, I just play at my house but they sound and play great.

I think that MIM strats today are just fine...no reason to spend an extra grand to have it made in America.

Besides, I'm surprised that no one has noticed that american workers are just as lazy and stupid as any in Mexico, so you can't say the workmanship is that great.

Man where is that coming from. I have 2 american fenders and the workmanship is outstanding... I am also an American craftsman in business for 38 years and I am neither lazy or stupid. This the problem with this country. Have a little pride..

Haha! If you're calling Americans lazy and stupid then what are us Aussies? WE (I know this is a generalisation, not all of us are stupid and lazy; and if any aussies get offended by this just remember i'm an aussie too!) are the worlds laziest people!

The new MIMs are outstanding guitars at an outstanding price. They are definitely gig worthy and do not disappoint. IMHO, in today's economy, the $400 (+/-) I spent on the MIM is an infinitely better bargain for what you get in return than the $!,000 (+/-) on a MIA one. Oh, and if you figure the percentages, resale value is roughly the same.

Of note: I personally don't think the vast majority of Americans or Mexicans are slackers when it comes to the quality/pride of their work.

There is an old joke about MIA vs MIM Fenders [removed because some might find offense at it, sorry]

That's a little softer than the above "lazy/stupid" comment, but not much.

I just got a deluxe mim strat and let me just say WOW! the noiseless pickups are great and the gold hardware looks absolutely stunning. If you want a good strat without spending a thousand plus, by a MIM, the deluxe is my favorite in saphire.
Just my .02 cents

I forgot to mention that with any strat and some mods you can get that clapton/ SRV/ Hendrix sound with any mim.

A lot of people think the factories are full of qualified luthiers making magical, mojo-filled musical instruments fit for kings.

"Lazy and stupid workers" is on the complete other side of the spectrum.

So which it is really?

You might want to consider the Classic Player 60's Strat. It comes with the 69's, but also a two-point vibrato and a 12" fretboard radius. It's a real bargain. I've only heard/read good things about it.

Well, yes I can say that IMO that the American Strats I own and have played do have great workmanship. The MIM do make some nice strats as well just have not come across one yet as great as my Am standard.

Well, I wasn't going to make assumptions based upon what we saw in those factory tour photos, but...

It would be interesting to know about the flow of staff between the two factories, wouldn't it?

Truth is, there is no intrinsic reason why product at any price level has to come from a factory in America, Mexico, Japan, China or Korea (am I missing any?) For example, Yamaha is making some seriously high quality acoustics in their huge wholy-owned Chinese factory - and selling them at high price points.

It is just that Fender has decided to appoint the Far East (excluding Japan) to make the budget product; Mexico the in-between grade; and to (nominally) build the most expensive part of the brand in the American operation, where labor costs are highest.

To my mind, a very intelligent response to the global nature of industry, these days. And a model widely emulated by other manufacturers in the music industry and elsewhere. It protects expensive jobs at home, while allowing companies to also compete in the lower priced areas of the market.

Within our lifetimes we shall see the cost of Far East manufacturing rise as living standards go up there. Then I guess we'll see our well-known domestic brands overcoming the (huge) hurdles to open factories in West Africa. I wonder when the first Ghanaian Stratocaster will hit the catalogue?

Cheers - C
