Does anyone know of any sites that sell em with scn pickups fitted (preferably uk but anywheres fine). Also can i hear some opinions on daphne blue with a pale maple neck, i'm considering refinishing my mexican strat and am quite drawn to that colour.

Hi, man: love that Daphne Blue, but I just want to draw to your attention Fender Sonic blue, too. Have a look at this one, for instance – pretty, no?

I have an instinct you are a gentleman who will do this finishing job nicely. Now, I previously insultingly mistook your level of experience when I was recommending to you Dan Erlewine’s book, The Guitar Player Repair Guide, and I don’t wish to make that mistake again. But if you did want thoughts on finishing, then the relevant chapter in that book is about the best thing of its kind, to my mind.

And if you really wanted to get scientific about it, then Dan Erlewine and Don MacRostie’s book Guitar Finishing Step-by-Step is about as intense as it gets (though rather too detailed for a one-off project). It contains recipes for many of those vintage Fender and Gibson finishes. Including Sonic Blue, but annoyingly not Daphne. Hmm.

On the neck thing, I’m sure you know, an over-simplistic view would be that amber lacquer means vintage; clear/pale, like yours, means modern. Personally, I just love the buttery pale maple ‘boards you get on modern American Fenders: I think that would look excellent on a 50s/60s colour body. After all, you are not trying to pretend to anyone it’s a period guitar – that’s what your new HotRod is for!

Last thing: not conclusive, but I don’t know of anyone doing SCN loaded pickguards in the UK. Everyone offering pre-loaded ‘guards is putting their own pickups into them – far as I can find. I’ve checked out the usual suspects… Course, any decent tech will make that item up for you – but then you can do that yourself.

Interested to see how you get on with this project, cos I think you’ll do it well. Keep us posted, eh?

- C

started today, with wiring some vintage noiseless pickups on my guitar and a new 5 way switch. The switch is temporary im considering this
http://www.award-session.com/BluesTone4.html
or maybe even an s1 system and a new pickguard later on. thanks for the link on finishing its something i've only done once before, on a explorer, mirrored black. Very very hard messy work. I think i'll have someone else do the paint job although i have noticed the neck/socket join on the guitar isn't right it looks like they cut too much away from the body, so maybe i'll just get a new one. anyway my mexican squire series is going to be one jaw dropping guitar when im done, it already plays like heaven and now with the economic climate ive got the time to get it sounding and looking the same. incidentaly i completely took it apart today its manufactuire date is 10/31/95 spooky eh.

Naahh, still looks good with the "blonde maple neck".
(trying to turn my own phrase there lol)
Look at this guy's strat here:

Awsome looking guitar, esp if u like that blue! Thumbs up!
In fact now that I look at it, I like the blonde neck better myself.

pickups are in and although i cant get a good evaluation of em (6 month old asleep) when i initialy checked my wiring by tuning one string and going through the selector they sound sir-wheat. Their not totaly noiseless though atleast not as noiseless as scn's they do sound deeper and very mellow though. 1 totaly chuffed brummie here.
