Hey brothers! You know when we're trawling the forums how pictures come up on either side of the center where the posts are at? I keep seeing that Red & White Strat with a single humbucker and single volume control in it and it says "So-Cal" on it. It looks like it has an EMG-81 in it as well and the dude with it has some patches on his shirt that say "Crew" and "Fender". Man, maple fretboard plus the way it's set-up...I have to have one of those!!! Does anyone have any information on it or know who the dude is holding it? I'm telling ya I love Fender Strats sooooooo much that I've been selling off all of my other axes just so I can have a whole "Fleet" of strats. Some of these that I'm selling are Custom Shop Jacksons, Handmade Washburns, Caparisons, and even some Ibanezs. That strat in particular is EXACTLY what I look for in a strat. I MUST GET ONE SOMEHOW!!!!!!!!!

Google.

I vaguely remember seeing a picture of that Strat, but I would google image SoCal Strat or something. That's what i do when I'm lookin' for a particular Strat. In fact, I just did it this morning for the 60th Anniversary and CP 50's...

EDIT: Guess which picture popped up after I posted this lol

EDIT #2: look what I found on google images:

You could always swap that out for a EMG.

Yeah I saw that as well, but it's not the same axe. I really don't like how the fretboard and the headstock are painted and the paint scheme on the body is slightly different as well. I LOVE maple fretboards and always will and the simplicity of just one humbucker with a single volume control. The one in the picture here is a maple neck/fretboard, the volume control is down a little further out of the way, and it has either an EMG or a Seymour Duncan Blackout in it (but I could do that install myself anyways). Thanks for the help. I never would have thought to Google it. :D

I looked just about everywhere that I could to try to find that exact same one, but I still have no luck. Even looking at all of the Fender Custom Shop models...but I did find a really cool Rockford Fosgate Strat on ebay though and the auction ends in less than 2 hours...hmmmmmm... 8)

The one in the pic on the side of the page has the same paint job, if you look very closely. It's hard to that the "white" is actually paint and not a clean maple fretboard.

I have been refreshing the fender site but I can't get the image u are talking about to come up. If I do I am going to try and view the source on the page.
Maybe I can find the name of that background image and call it out in here.

Ah! I see said the blind man (that's me) . You're right Mike! Man that's a bummer. It would look so great with a clean maple board and headstock, even a reverse headstock. Hmmmm. Maybe it'd be worth the cheese to buy the darn thing then customize it in that fashion. The setup is definetly what I'm looking for, but a basswood body? I'm partial to alder, but who knows...Thanks for pointing that out brother. Did you check out the Rockford one on ebay? It's pretty darn cool too.

Don't fear a basswood body...
The Satriani guitars (JS models) have a basswood body & I really love that instrument...
The sustain on that thing is awsome when setup well.

It doesn't seem to be too expensive (new for $500 on MF before they discontinued?), so I would say experiment. If you don't like it, then it's not like it was a ginormous investment, and you can always re-sell it. I've become a maple-board fan myself; managed to find a CP50 with a very nicely finished maple neck / board...it's amazing =]

You can order a maple neck from like Steward McDonald for $125 I think, but I'm pretty sure it won't be finished, and it doesn't include tuners.

that my friend is what fender calls the "Fender So-Cal Speed Shop Guitar" ... heres the write up on it:
in 1946, the same year fender began building musical instruments, Alex Xydias, using $100 borrowed from his mother, opened the SO-CAL Speed Shop. (which built and restored hot rods, customs, motorcycles and race cars.)
Inspired by the Fender Custom Shop's Master-built one-off, the SO-CAL speed shop guitar is the ultimate hot rod guitar! Featuring a basswood body and maple neck with a custom red, white and black SO-CAL speed shop paint job. One hot Alnico humbucking pickup, single volume control, hard-tail bridge and super fast neck make this guitar a screamer!
hope thats helps man, rock on

Alain don't come out to play much these days, does he?

Anyway: shazzam! What a finish! Not usually my kinda thing, but I could make an exception. Looks like it's ready to set a world speed record on a salt lake somewhere...

Seen Alain around on another thread recently.

This is a show gig guitar, ( a la ZZTop), one that comes off the stage with you and goes home quietly. Definitely not a bar gig player, left to lay around and walk away.

Yeah man. That thing looks impressive, but it's no metal axe for sure. As far as not being a "bar gig" axe...What if when you play you're used to getting paid $2,500.00 to $3,000.00 a night for a 2 hour gig? I'm talkin' about BIG venues here, but anyway thanks for all of the information dudes. It's starting to look like I must keep looking on e-bay to find what I'm after or to buy something and then completely modify it to my specs. Or I could easily play another brand that I won't mention here and get paid for doing so (starts with an "S"). Unfortunately the model that I was interested in is now discontinued so I'm not about to chase a ghost while there's soooooo much new material to write. The best part is that I talked to the Fender reps at both of the NAMM shows that I played at in the early 90's and they couldn't have cared less about technical speed metal at all. Jackson, ESP, and Fernandez (of all people) were more than interested. The main point here is that I LOVE FENDER STRATS now and if they have a humbucker, then they'll do just fine for me because I can always install a Seymour Duncan Distortion into it and completely SMOKE the competition. Seriously dudes...these things play like BUTTER!!! If you can't play a strat, then you'd better not pursue the endeavor any further; simply put.

You dudes all RULE in my book so keep up your dreams because that's all that we have left in this world! Oh yeah, I'll be totally changing my page here very soon to show some of the CRAZY stuff that we've been writing lately. Like Tommy says: "A great riff is just that without some beats to back it up." And he is soooooo right!!!
