I just sent one back to trade up to an American Strat , the body and neck are great I had problems with the pickups, bridge and tuners I looked into replacing those items and add the cost in to the MIM and it was close to the MIA price. I was in my 30 day return so I sent it back and got the candy cola MIA and it is sweet no tuning problems and great sound out of all three pickups.

If you plan on going with the MIM I will say it played and felt great just my taste did not like the sound. You can prolly get away with changing the pickups and tuners and have a great guitar. The MIA can be found for 899 and the MIM for 399 so it may be a bargin to if you can keep the upgrades under a few hundred.

I said this earlier in another post but mexican made strats are made of the same wood and most of the same parts of american strats. The reason i know this is that my teacher used to work for fender and he has a tone of mexi strats that sound better that american strats, just change the pickups.

My uncle swears by MIM Strats, but I wasn't a fan; I can't stand the unfinished necks on most of 'em. They just feel cheap, rough, half-assed....but that's just my opinion.

I stay away from Stds, Deluxe Players, and Highway 1s. However, I just put a layaway down on a Classic Players 50's, which is MIM w/ AMerican parts (think: highway 1) and the neck is finished. It also has the cool "Fender Custom Shop Designed" neckplate. For some reason, it also has the 60th Anniversary decal on the back of the headstock? It sports Custom Shop '57/'62 pups, which I will be swapping out for some EMG SAs and EGX and SPC pots.

I have a 2007 MIM strat with maple fb and I couldn't be happier with the way it plays. Now I'm no pro when it comes to how single coils should sound in different positions since I'm used to playing an LP but it sure sounds good to me. I've read from more learned people on this site that many MIM strats of recent years are top notch. I don't think you'll be disappointed BUT I caution you to test drive as many as you can to find the one that speaks to you.

^^True that. I was in Guitar Center July 4th for at least 2 hrs playin' every single Strat they had: MIM Stds, MIA Stds, MIM Deluxe's, MIA Deluxe's, Signature Series, Highway One's...

Gotta say, I loved the V-neck...but the American Deluxe is $1200 and the Clapton Sig is $1500...the "smooshed V" on the CP50 will hold me for now...

We have one of each and I like the Mexican guitar very much. I just like the American guitar better: It sounds better for the music I play.

When you consider that the American guitar is commonly discounted to about $900 and you get a truly excellent hard case with it, and better pickups and fretboard, then there is, in practical terms, a not much cost difference between the two, provided that the hard case and details are important to you. Considering it's something I play almost every day, it was worth the extra money.

On the other hand, my son's approach was to get the Mexican model, then add a hard case later. He's very happy with his guitar, and being a fat strat, he prefers it to my standard strat because his has the humbucker sound he likes for a lot of things.

Realistically, I think he'll eventually decide that the little quality features of the higher priced guitars are worth the money and trade up. I don't see myself upgrading or trading up from the American Strat because there's really nothing to trade up to, unless I want something totally different or custom pickups someday.

It's really good that Fender has such a taken a such a thoughtful approach at accommodating different budgets.

The American Deluxe's with the V-neck are nice...that's the only thing I would trade-up to, regarding my American Std...but I love Gloria too much to get rid of her =]

THat is were I was going with my post, if you can live with the tone and play it and do small upgrades here and there it is a great deal. But I wanted to change to much at once and it sent the cost up to the MIA .

+1 to that ... I have an '04 that will take the Pepsi challenge with any of its similar MIA brethren. Monster sustain. However, consider a 22-fret model if this important to you. Having only 21 frets has been the only negative on my MIM guitar.

The electronics are far from "bad." The pickups don't deserve the immediate replacement they often get. As for the quality of the wood, there has to be a difference, as this wise man put it:

April of 2007 I went into my local shop with every intention of buying a MIA Strat, cash I might add. I played a few and they played and sounded exactly as I expected - quite nice.

I kept seeing this Ash Strat from across the room which one of the employees had just put on the floor. To make a long story short, I decided to check it out. This one out sung, out sustained and out played all the others. Lo and behold, it was a MIM! I bought it instead of a MIA because that's how much it impressed me. And except for a few tiny cosmetic changes, the only thing major I did was to replace the pickups. To this day, I am 100% happy with it and have absolutely no urges for a MIA nor any regrets for not buying one in the first place. I know I have an excellent instrument, have nothing to prove to anyone and that's all that counts as above all, I'm the only one who has to play it.

Looks like the initials of a previous owner.
