I'm sure I'll get shot down for my opinion, but I personally avoid anything 'soft' in the neck joint. I want the best possible wood-to-wood contact between neck and body. I haven't had one recently, but I recall Fender's sticky labels in this joint; the first thing I'd do is get rid of them (I'd stick them under the scratchplate instead)! I was (and remain) absolutely convinced that I could hear the difference!

Fair enough with a hardwood shim, though. Not that I've ever needed one, but clearly I've been lucky!

Cheers - Peter.

An opinion that I tend to agree with. I'm uncomfortable with cardboard. Not because of tone-concerns so much as a gut feeling. And some advice I got about neck warping. I'm just scratching the surface of DYI guitar repair, but wood on wood contact feels like a better solution than cardboard, a guitar pick, tape, or any of the other homegrown solutions used over the years.

Why do you need a shim ? Action is too high and you can't adjust with saddles ?

Having the guitar set up by the local technician (pro setup). The action is too high (and the angle off) without a shim. The guitar was originally shimmed with a piece of cardboard.

Truth is, I'm trying to take this opportunity to learn as much as I can about guitar maintenance, history, "standard practice", or whatever... I know there are a lot of ways to solve this problem.

Shim is only need when you can't have the right action with saddles height.
There are no lots of way to solve this problem.

If the guitar was originally set up with a shim;
1- The guitar may need one, saddle height don't work.
2- Or guitar do not need one but Fender make a good repro.

Is your tech is a professional he know what he do.

What's with the paranoia about cardboard shims?
If you were to take a wooden shim of the same thickness as the card and put it in a vice and tighten the jaws it will crush.
Do the same with the cardboard, and it won't happen.

There's nothing wrong with using neck angle adjusters either.

Somes say cardboard don't conduct neck vibration very well.

More or less vibration; where is the better sound ?

I'd defy anyone to be able to hear the difference under blind testing conditions.
It's just another example of guitarist nervosa - it's a solution to a problem that in truth does not exist.
Thin card is fine to use for shimming a neck.

The vintage 54 60th reissue that I had and have since sold (one of the first 1954s) had some type of paper shim in the neck. I was the second owner but the shim "looked" original... maybe that's why I never bonded with that strat!
I have a photo of it somewhere
Wonder if any other vintage 54 owners have that shim?
Anyone looked? Don't chip the fast lacquer! :D

That's exactly how mine was. Must be the same with all 60th '54 RI.

Or I bought your guitar... ;)
