Just curious, how common is it for a reissue guitar to be shimmed from the factory? It seems inconceivable to me that a new reissue has a "deep neck pocket" and needs to be shimmed.

Thanks.

Many original instruments required a shim -- perhaps the re-issue guitar replicates this detail only in the interest of historical accuracy.

My '62 RI had a shim, and I bought it new so it came that way from the factory.

Ditto my '57 RI. I bought it from a store I worked at and unboxed and did the set up myself...not that there was much adjusting as it was damn near perfect. So I to am positive it came from the factory with one!

No. I was setting up my new (to me) AVRI and removed the neck to find a shim.

I've come to realise since that neck shims are common on bolt necks. I would have assumed that instruments that come from factory would have been made to better tolerances, especially instruments made in 2015/2016. But it appears this is not the case.

You buy a reissue ( guitar build like in the olds days) but you want a modern guitar

A neck shim isn't an issue - even on a reissue.

(Sorry, facepalm, I'll get me coat etc. It's morning and I'm only on my second cup of coffee...)

I bought a guitar with vintage specs. I didn't buy a guitar built in a vintage shop.

Regardless, I didn't realise that neck shims were as common as I've come to learn since original post. Which was the purpose of my post. We all have to start somewhere.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a buy not build type of guy. Wondering does anybody have any recommendations on where to buy pre-made shims? A quick Google search found a couple, but is one brand preferred over the others?

I don't think there can significant performance differences between different brand pre-made shims - especially considering the numerous shim types and materials used successfully by DIY type persons.

But:

You'd have to know the exact shim dimensions you need, otherwise you have to do the final fitting yourself...
It's not a bad idea to have the guitar shimmed & set up by a pro.

Why do you need a shim ?
Action is too high and you can't adjust with saddles ?

On your post you just talk about guitar build with shim, not the set up need one or I'm wrong ?

Having the guitar set up by the local technician (pro setup). The action is too high (and the angle off) without a shim. The guitar was originally shimmed with a piece of cardboard.

Truth is, I'm trying to take this opportunity to learn as much as I can about guitar maintenance, history, "standard practice", or whatever... I know there are a lot of ways to solve this problem.
