I am new to Stratocaster values. I looked up my serial number (659052) on https://reverb.com/news/how-to-date-a-fender, and it looks like it's a 1975 unless I'm reading something wrong. I'll link to some pictures below. I'm wondering if there are any unique things about it that would increase or decrease its value. One thing I noted is that the pickup selector is a 5-position selector, and I think I remember reading that prior to '77 they all came with 3-position selectors. Though I heard people often modified them or put in 5-position selectors because they like them. Not sure how much that would ding the value or even bring question as to its actual date of manufacture.

I tried to highlight some of the blemishes to show what kind of shape it's in. I also have what appears to be a more original-style case (it's rectangular), but it's beat to crap, so I wouldn't think it would be worth anything. Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. Reverb's listings were all over the map, so they weren't that helpful for me.

I, too read that 5 position switch start in 1977. Funny !
And you serial number is for a 1975 guitar

I have a 1979 Strat with this 5 pos.

IMO the value is 2K to 2.5K ?

I'm not a expert

That's not wear, but irreversible neglect. Expect the value to drop accordingly.
On an Excellent/Great/Good/Fair/Poor scale, I would call this fair if it plays well, and poor otherwise. So to be realistic, go with the lower numbers you can find.

Hardtail with that color probably around the price already suggested.
I sounds funny but the original case and any other bits help add to the authenticity so include them with the sale if you can however with shipping that can be an additional cost since you still need a good case to protect the guitar.
Buyers like to see under the pickguard as well to help determine original bits etc.. :D

Bluebook values:
Mint: 3k
Exc: 2.4k-1.9k
Vgood+: 1.5k
Vgood: 1.2k
good: 975.00

I would estimate yours is in the very good(70%) ballpark, maybe 1-1.1k depending on functionality.
However the color natural in this case is a 10-20% subtraction. Black, blonde, CAR, Oly white and Sonic blue all add x%. Antigua and International colors are valued slightly higher w/ exception of the CAR and Sonic blue.
The original hard shell case is a plus as well as any original tags/documentation.
1975 lists white or black plastic parts, white plastic is slightly higher valued.
How does it play? if it doesn't work as intended subtract $....
Does the nut, frets or other parts need replaced?
You got the picture, it isn't rare or a collector piece per say.
If it were mine, I would take the 1st offer of $800 and call it a good deal.

You can tell by the pics that the nut needs to be replaced - the grooves go so far down that the action must be uncomfortably high to avoid buzz.

Add the cost of a tetanus shot for when you get splinters in your hand.

Came across this on eBay:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1975-Fender-Stratocaster-Hardtail-Vintage-Guitar-Natural-Ash-Lightweight-w-hc-/152285332923?hash=item2374e9c5bb:g:0r8AAOSwxKtYBcsn

I appreciate that asking price and selling price are two completely different things but, with respect, would have to suggest the eBay one is in very much better condition.

[edit] After looking at more of the pictures I would have to reassess my conclusion regarding the condition as, it would appear, they used a (badly) trained rat to increase the depth of the pup cavities.

This is only my humble opinion, but I think everything said here is accurate. It should have come with a 3 position switch. Although the original case is beat, helps a little bit with the value of the instrument. I can confirm the pricing here seems fair. It might fetch over $1000-$1400 depending on how badly the buyer wants it, but $800-$900 range seems about right considering the condition and the mods that we know of. I have a 75 hardtail as well, my serial number starts with 575xxx. I would verify the pot codes and have an expert confirm that it is the original finish. That will help. My resources tell me in EC it's worth over $2000.

I have a 76 that is the same finish, but it is not a hard tail. Have had it since 79. ImageIMGP0564 by Steve, on Flickr
