Hello people!

I've read somewhere that Fender made some changes for the better (I think) after the production year of 2006 on MIM strats? Any truth to that or did I dream it?

I'd love to get a USA strat but really cant justify the cost, so an MIM would fit just fine. I have a freind with one and its a wonderful instrument.... I'm just wondering if I look for a used one, should I stay from 2006 newer or does it really matter?

Thanks for the info!

Keith

I bought a pre-2006 MIM strat, and I remember shortly afterwords, I got a catalog from Musician's Friend that announced some changes (for the better) on the Standard Strats. One of the changes, that stands out in my mind, was the frets, which it said were the same put on the American Standards. There were upgrades on some other components, but I can't recall what those were. I remember I was a bit frustrated, that it happened right after I bought mine. Still......my MIM Strat is a great guitar.

I just put a used Classic Players 50's (2007?) on layaway; the thing rocks. It shall stand side-by-side with my '95 - '96 MIA Std.

I have an '04 and researched this a bit earlier. There were a number of items, but the main ones on the 06+ guitars are:
1) The trem block -- To me, this is the only significant change of the '06s. The trem block on the 06+ guitars is about twice the size of the pre-06. Everyone with the old one should swap it out. It is a breeze to do the swap. I bought a used trem block from an '08 for $12.
2) The wood -- Supposedly the 06+ guitars utilize a fewer-piece alder body. However, in researching this further, the exact details of what actually changed is verrrrry vague. However, what I think is that Fender went from a four or five-piece alder body to a three-piece alder body. All I know is that I have an '04 that is heavy, resonates amazingly, and got great sustain even with the old trem block.

The other '06 improvements had to do with some esoteric items like "more cavity shielding", "better electronic components", and similar stuff. What I think happened here is that Fender standardized the MIM construction to exactly match the MIA factory. Thus, these are changes that likely benefit Fender more than it does the consumer. But -- like any big company in any industry -- they sell it to their customers as "new and improved". While there likely are some real improvements, I do not think the actual "amount of improvement" is significant (and likely not very noticable, if at all).
