Thank Arjay! No, I only swapped the original singlecoil to another singlecoil. Can't remember the brand....

That's a very optimistic asking price. And just that - an asking price.

Of course, there are always going to be old and sentimental guys to whom money is not an objection, as long as they get to buy an item that brings them closer to a youth which obviously is never coming back.
But the peak for that has passed, with fewer surviving dreamers every year, and more guitars going back on the market as the owners die.

If buying a ~40-50 year old guitar today, it's likely going to slowly depreciate for as long as you're alive, and your descendents aren't going to hang on to it long enough for it to go back up in price again.

Such a cheery thought for a Monday morning but perhaps a valid one.

I agree that old stuff may not command silly money price tags forever but there will always be people who want legitimate old stuff because it is old. I'd like a '62 Strat and a '62 Champ and a '62 Porsche 356 because they were born the same year as me. Obviously I wasn't really aware of them for another 10 years after that but I can still relate to their age.

I think that, as we get older, there is a fascination with how things have developed (or not) in our life time and previously.

You do make a fair point though as, even though probably a better guitar, I would be more inclined to pay for a '62 than a '57 for the reasons as noted above.

"Old" does have the market advantage in that there is a limited supply. That will always encourage those who are interested in the direction of paying more or securing more examples.

At the end of the day people will only pay what it is worth to them. On a similar note people will only sell for what they think something is worth. I have drawers full of old mobile phones, and the like, which are worth next to nothing. I won't put them on eBay because I wouldn't get enough to part with them and yet I won't throw them away. There are things I would rather destroy than sell to people for a fraction of what I think they are worth. This all goes to pot when people die which is where the clearance people make their money.

I like my guitars to have a bit of history in them. The guitar I've had the longest, (apart from my old battered nylon), is a guitar that's thrown together from different parts. It looks like a strat, but the only fender part on it are the pickguard and the tone/volume knobs. I've played that guitar since the mid 80's. It's got history in it, and better still, it's my history!
Same thing with the -67 we are discussing here. It was an important part of my musical life. I'm turning 60 next year, so I'm slowly turning into that boring old fart that I looked down on when I was in my 20's, at least I should be turing in to that. And maybe me buying back the old guitar is a sentimental thing that really proves that I am turning in to the old fart, but still, I don't think so. I picked up the guitar when I was 14. That's about 45 years ago, and I've never stopped playing, so I'm still a working, playing, composing musician/guitarist, and I find that inspiration can come from many different sources. I think that if I can buy this guitar back, it will make me feel happy and inspired, maybe an old fart, but at least a happy one... 8)

I share your sentiments.

Were I able to locate and buy back my '66 Strat (my first, purchased in '68), I surely would.

Arjay is spot on as usual, the main difference between fair and good is the re-finish and the non-original pup.
An original finish w/ 20% missing from normal play ie. buckle rash/arm wear or chips&dings w/ the original components and case could be considered very good.

If the seller knows how sentimental the guitar is to you, he can squeeze you for a couple hundred more.

Best of luck, pictures would be great if you end up with the guitar.

Or he could be a decent human being and let it go for less.

After trying to get as much info as possible regarding the price on this kind of guitar, I've now given him an offer at $3.900. I've collected ino from here, some other forums, checked the Blue book, and have been in contact with resellers of vintage instruments. There are guitars listed on Ebay for lot more, (a bit better condition that this one), but they are unsold, so I don't take those prices in consideration.
Now let's see what he says!

Well you've unzipped your trousers -- hopefully the seller will like what he sees.

Good luck!

Well, he rejected my offer, so I asked him what price he would consider selling it for. Waiting for his answer!
To be continued.....

That didn't work then. :(

It looks like he's going for the jugular.

Well, the seller decided to hang on to the guitar. Guess it's more his then mine since he owned it for 35 years... Anyway, I'm happy with my -79, so I'm not "strat-less"!
