Posted this in the wrong forum, so I try here.....
I've been given a chanse to buy back my old strat that I sold 35 years ago and been kicking myself ever since... It's a -67, (think that the neck is marked -66). It was originally sunburst, but have been re-painted twice, first black, and now sunburst. Re-fretted, tuners changed, bridge pickup not original, switch changed to a 5-way, whammy bar not original. What would be a fair price to pay for a guitar in this condition? And yeah, I really want it....

Lots. You going to have to really want it, although the modifications will keep the price down a bit.

I guess between £5K and £10K but could be more.

I'm looking at prices on sales in reverb.com, and it seems to range between £6000 and £6500, but that's for instruments in original, or near original, condition.
I'm guessing that a repainting, (twice!), bridge pickup changed, new tuners, (well new, I changed them back in the 70's...) would bring the price down a bit. It's more of a player.
Do I want it? Yep, but not at any price..... I was thinking about £4100, but maybe that's too cheap?

Damn - not a bad guess on my part then ;-)

Changes will certainly impact on the value and a lot depends on how well the changes were made, how long ago, how they have mellowed in, if they could be reversed etc.

Absolute original will be what attracts the big bucks so you might be able to haggle to your price. The down side, for you, is the sum of the parts. Vintage necks can go for several thousand alone. I've seen original Pat Pend saddles at over £100 each etc.

Looks like my guess was even better than I thought.

Well, some of the changes were made by myself, in the 70's, I changed the bridge pickup, tuner and switch. The paintjob has been made after I owned it.

The paint job could work in your favour as it could have dramatically devalued the body as will the screw holes where you changed the tuners.

Offer £4100 and see what happens. You can always go higher if you want it that much.

I know what you mean though. I've been after a Rose Morris Avon SG copy for a bit now. Not because it was a particularly good guitar (it probably wasn't) but because it was the first electric I bought. I don't want it for playing just to stand it in the corner, look at it and rekindle happy memories.

I've tried to fish around in other forums, asked dealers and so on, and it seems like it should be around $4-5k.

Yeah, I think that the guitar is in good condition, play-wise, but as said, it has some stuff changed. Where did you find this info?

That's a very optimistic asking price. And just that - an asking price.

Of course, there are always going to be old and sentimental guys to whom money is not an objection, as long as they get to buy an item that brings them closer to a youth which obviously is never coming back.
But the peak for that has passed, with fewer surviving dreamers every year, and more guitars going back on the market as the owners die.

If buying a ~40-50 year old guitar today, it's likely going to slowly depreciate for as long as you're alive, and your descendents aren't going to hang on to it long enough for it to go back up in price again.

You got a point! Is it sentimental reasons that makes me wanna buy the guitar back? Sure. I don't even know if it's a good guitar anymore! Haven't played it for 35 years.... Last year I managed to buy my old 50w plexi from 1969 back. Sentimental reasons? Nope, not that time. That is simply the best amp I ever played and I was forced to sell it 20 years ago because we didn't have any money. Is this guitar the best I ever played? Don't think so, really. The main guitar I'm using now, a -79 strat, is a great instrument that suits me perfect. But, that said, I kind of always regretted selling the -67, and when I found it and I probably could have a chanse to buy it, well.... But, you've given me something to think about!

Two refins, aftermarket tuners, and a non-original bridge pickup (did you rout the body to install a humbucker?) probably place the guitar solidly in the "fair" category.
