My guitar teacher used to work at a fender factory and he said that the highway ones and american standards are made with all the same things execpt for a little cheaper wood. So really if you buy the highway you get an american standard that is made in Mexico. But in the end its just what sounds the best to you.

It was my understanding that the hwy 1 is built in the US and that the only difference between the STD and the Hwy is finish, bridge and pups?

The American Standard also staggered machine heads which have eliminated one string tree... I have no idea why they haven't applied the same angle on the headstock of the Eric Johnson Stratocaster to the American Standard to completely eliminate string trees.

I was also wondering if anyone knew anything positive about Poly finishes. I know that they can be completed in 1 day, whereas Nitro takes roughly 3 last time I checked, but it seems universally accepted that nitro sounds better. Why then hasn't Fender made THAT the standard?

Nitro used to be the standard. I then wasn't allowed anymore (toxic), and the polyester finishes are more robust.
The American Standard and Highway 1 also have different neck shapes and fret sizes. Because of this, I would definitely play both before choosing either one.

I wanted a nitro finish but the highway one
just didn't feel as good as the american standard to me
so I went with that.
Atleast they made the new standards with
"a thinner finish undercoat that lets the body breathe and improves resonance."

On the finish thing: nitro is still widely used. And contrary to some views on this Forum they shoot plenty of nitro at the Corona factory, it is not only "inflicted" upon folks in the Mexican factory. With the right precautions it is perfectly legal and safe.

Polyurethane is also widely used on Fender and other guitars, and to my mind is absolutely fine: thin, attractive and durable. Personally, I'm very satisfied if my finishes don't yellow and crack, which is a significant part of the mojo people attach to nitro. That's a matter of taste, you takes your pick on that one. (I’m sure people will have things to say about that, any minute.)

Far as polyester is concerned, the major objection is the severe thickness with which it tends to be applied, though Fender’s got much better on that. Mr Nikininja is currently running another thread here where he's refinishing a MIM Strat. He had the sensational idea of weighing his guitar before and after removing the poly, and found he'd taken off around 197 grams of lacquer! That's about half a small jar of peanut butter - now we don't go covering our guitars in peanut butter, do we?

Thick lacquers look bad when they get chipped and most people reckon they adversely affect tone. Eric Johnson thinks so, and we don’t argue with ears like his. On the other hand, if you own a poly finished Strat it really is not something you need to loose sleep over – its fine.

The coming thing is waterbase finishes. To me they are advantageous in just about every way: the only disadvantage is they don’t have the aforementioned mojo of nitro. And guitarists are a very traditional-minded lot.

Persistent rumour has it that Martin are already using waterbase finishes on some of their top-end instruments, but I cannot find confirmation of that, though I’ve tried. I suspect they are planning for the day when they will say, “what do you mean, it has to be nitro? You’ve been playing waterbase for years – didn’t you realise?”

We may see waterbase finishes on Fenders and Gibsons quite soon. I bet they start sneaking them by in the undercoats and progress from there. Stay tuned.

- C

I would like to no why so many believe that Nitro finishes are not allowed to be spayed in U.S. anymore. They do still spray Nitrocellulose it is just harder to work with and a much thinner finish and will not clog the wood pores. Its a cost and time thing. Also there are to different Polys being used one is Polyester which is cheap and easy to use it is also the thickest finish product in use. Then you have Polyurethane which is not a resin base like polyster but it is a much thinner finish. But it also cost much more to use but is in between Nitro and Polyester as a finish goes for sound. The most durable are the Poly finishes though they are very hard to repair. The best sounding is believed to be the Nitro because of its meterial makup and how thin it is which is why its not as durable but in a guitar it is all about sound I say.

Then look for a strat with low-output vintage type pickups.
That and the right amp will get you into JF tonal territory.

I'd look to kinman for low output vintage pickups. Or the bareknuckles Apache set, i have heard really really good things about them. I got vintage noiseless on one of my strats and up until now im not impressed with em.

Actually, the HWY1's are made at the Corona plant in the US....

Well Actually the difference's for the 08's are the finishes, pickups and neck/headstock, and the highway's are made in the U.S.A.

I have the same choice to make at the moment. I've got HW 1 strat on reserve. I think I'm gonna go for it. I played it, and an AM STD today again. It just feels nicer. I love the easy bluesy tones in the upper neck, as mentioned earlier here. The STD is almost a bit more reserved.
