Goe to a music store if possible and play both then decide which one you like best.

Agreed. But to add, no two Highway One's are identical, and no two American Standard Strats are identical. Play as many guitars until you find the one that "sings" to you. I would also recommend that you play through as similar amp to yours at home also. Amps can influence sound. Hope I could help! :D

Oldpat is right but I would perfer the new american standard. There is a reason Fender values one more than the other, but both are fine guitars

I'd pick the American Standard, but that's just my personal choice. The final decision is in the hands of the buyer.

My guitar teacher used to work at a fender factory and he said that the highway ones and american standards are made with all the same things execpt for a little cheaper wood. So really if you buy the highway you get an american standard that is made in Mexico. But in the end its just what sounds the best to you.

There's a big price difference, especially if you catch a Guitar Center Highway One sale when they really mark them way down. I bought the Highway One, played it for quite a while and got to know it and enjoyed it, and then upgraded the pickups past the standard level with CS Texas Specials. If you don't want to swap pickups, make sure you're okay with the Alnico IIIs in the Highway One rather than the more vintage sounding Alnico Vs in the Standanrd. The oem Highway One pickups are great in a lot of ways, with hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 thanks to reverse polarity middle, but can have a metallic sound played clean. What I liked them for was the nice fat blues tone they had in the neck especially with a BJ on about 7. The bridge in the oem Highway One really gets nice and glassy with the gain cranked. The CS Tx Spcs are another level with a very SRV tone from the neck with a BJ volume at about 11 1/2 and reverb on 1 or 2, and sweet clean blues tone from any position with the volume at about 7.

Also peeps should no that if they buy a used HWY1 before the upgrade was done they do not have the reverse polarity center pup or the grease bucket circut. I think they are still alnico III's though.

It was my understanding that the hwy 1 is built in the US and that the only difference between the STD and the Hwy is finish, bridge and pups?
