Be gentle, don't turn the rod too much. Also, after you lower it, the rod / neck will have to settle. Then, come back and make another adjustment (if necessary).

If you hear cracking / creaking / splintering, that is very bad.

Here's a link that might help you with the string height and bridge adjustments :

I've adjusted the bridge height once before. I just used the recommended Fender settings, and used an auto feeler gauge, and luckily didn't destroy anything. A couple of years later, I took the guitar down to a tech and had him do a whole setup.

I got a compass and some thin cardboard some years back and drew some arc's. 7.5" 10" and 12.5" radius cut these into templates. what i tend to do is get the high E sounding and playing right, then use the appropriate template for the fingerboard radius of the guitar at the bridge e.g. 7.25 fingerboard with a 7.5" template. The slight increase in radius sets the low E about right and all the rest of the strings. after that adjust to suit every string, they should be pretty much right providing you haven't set the high E too low or high. I set my high E to 2.5mm and my low E to about 4mm. hope this helps the template trick gets you there quicker than anything else i've tried. Every guitar is different regardless of neck radius or length.
