The case I have is an old tweed case, I don't think original for my guitar but perhaps older than it. Anyway the guitar is very loose in the case and knocks around a lot. I am thinking of getting a newer case or nice gig bag even to keep it in. It looks like even the new Fender cases would be a bit loose but I could be wrong. What do you guys suggest? Thanks.

Probably the best protection, and definitely the best fit:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/099-6105-106

If you really want a tweed case:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/099-6103-400

A less expensive tweed case:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/099-6105-300

I have all of these cases, and the guitar can be just a little loose in the tweed cases (the style, whether tweed or tolex-like covering), but still good cases.

Or peruse the other offerings:

The G&G cases are the best available (disregarding an aluminum Anvil case).

The molded ABS plastic cases will become brittle with age and eventually fracture, generally at the hinges and/or the latches.

Fender's Pro-Line cases are cheaply-made copies of the G&G case with flimsy construction and cut-rate hardware.

G&G cases feature industry-standard hardware throughout, premium materials, solid assembly, and snugly fit the instrument as it should.

If you just want a change, fair enough, but otherwise I'd suggest wrapping the guitar in a cloth (before putting it in the case). Much cheaper and effective too!

Cheers - Peter.

Much depends on how you transport your guitar. Mine are carried in my car and, as a result, I changed over to padded gig bags. Hard cases certainly protect your instrument (subject to quality) but can wreck everything else they come into contact with and are certainly not leather seat friendly. ;-)

If you want/need a hard case then the full on aluminium edged ply flight case type are the way to go. Many others can be the worse of both worlds in providing less than bullet proof protection and still wrecking everything else in their vicinity.

All that said, I have been very pleased with SKB rack cases and would perhaps consider the SKB I series case for close to best protection. Gator also have the attention to detail which suggested their products are actually designed by (or at least they listen to) musicians using the item so I wouldn't hesitate to try their products.

Foam rubs nitro finishes.

Put a well-worn cotton T-shirt on it.

No, definitely not the best fit. It's a combined Strat/Tele case, which means it isn't a perfect fit for either.
There are body molded strat cases out there, but they are expensive.

I did not think to wrap the guitar, good idea. The case itself is pretty beat up but it still works, I'd rather not end up with an empty case but a good gig bag might do too. I usually keep the guitar in its case in a separate room from where I play so it does get moved around a lot. It also usually gets weekly car rides around from lessons, guitar stores etc. There have been a few times where it has slid off my back seat and hit the floor, which is why I am considering other options.

My fiddle has its own little blankie to keep it snug in the case. If I had a loose guitar case, I'd probably do the same (but obviously a bigger blanket...) Yay for low tech solutions :)

As for the case sliding off the back seat, use the seat belts. It's easier if you fasten the seat belts first, and then slide the case in. It's safer not just for the guitar, but for you.
(My amps get bungee corded to the safety eyelets in the trunk - if something happens, I really don't want a 60 lb tube amp playing Newton's laws on the back of my head.)

I bought a Gator Titan Series case a couple of months ago, to replace a Fender ABS case, and IMO, it is a top notch case.
The case is made of NK-7 resin (strong stuff), and not ABS. The inside bottom (cradle) is made from a rigid foam, and the top has a soft foam strip that runs the length of the neck and another soft foam strip located over the body behind the bridge, that apply soft pressure to the instrument, when the case is closed, and prevent any movement. And as an added bonus, it is waterproof to 30 feet, so you can take it with you when you go scuba diving.

The cheapest place I found it was Amazon.

Sweetwater has a couple of good videos of a Gator Cases rep. trying to destroy it with a hammer.

That's someone trying hard to not destroy it with a hammer.
Pretty much any case will survive four taps at a specifically chosen spot. The weak points are corners, latches, hinges, handles and wheels.
This type of "demo" more than anything steers me away from the company as intentionally misleading their customers. If the cases really were the best, there would be no need to mislead customers through cheap tricks.

Disclosure: I'm biased. I had a Gator case. I dropped it on a corner from knee height while putting it in a closet, and a hinge broke.
It was also very uncomfortable to carry, due to the weight of the guitar pulling on one end, while the handle wasn't offset accordingly. That's always going to be a problem with cases where the exterior is the same for all guitars and only the interior differs. Different guitars have different weight distributions.

I think my definition of a "tap" is somewhat different than yours. If i hit one of my ABS cases that hard with a hammer that size, I imagine that I would have a busted case, and at the very least a hole in the top.
The hinges are made with the same material as the rest of the case and are moulded in, and the latches are claw type found on most of the touring/flight cases.

I may be wrong, but I believe the handle being centered is by design (some of their other cases do have offset handles), because the accessory storage is located at the front on either side of the neck. At any rate, I don't have a problem with the case being unbalanced.
