Staying with the true and tested is good. I don't mind different models to capture more sales, but then they really should be different models, not minor variations given new names. That's just causing confusion on both ends of the dollar.

The problem isn't with the American Standard: it's with fidgety executives and marketing agents who are nervous about eating as much a share of the market as they can.

+1

An unintended consequence of such unbridled avarice is loss of quality control, dilution of traditional Strat specifications, and an unfocused perspective about the model's very raison d'etre.

Well stated!

It's true! Zzounds is discounting all their American Standards by $200. They never discount anything.
Dang. Missed it by 18 months.

I pity those that bought one last week. Ouch! There goes any resale value I thought I might have had. Not that I was selling, but I imagine there are plenty on ebay right now. Double ouch.

I was hoping for a pup change. I actually bought a new American Std. It's just me,,,,, I didn't care for the Fat-50s pickups. I returned the guitar. I like the American Special Strat model better with it's old school head stock, sweet sounding pups.

Fender needs a new MIA guitar.
Ok, start with a new name, ,,,,,,and change the pups with more color options. Winter NAMM.

I think they can improve on the guitar. I get my impressions right out of the box. Yes, a lot of people like adjustments and tweaks on new guitars. I'd like to see better factory set-ups, for the consumer. More quality out the door.

Yes, after many years of more expensive MIA's (including a CS), my surf green Special has surprised me - it's a great guitar! OK, I've had it refretted to medium jumbos (didn't like the jumbos), and shortened the saddle screws, but otherwise it's stock. Currently my favourite Strat, in a colour you can't get on a new AmStd!

Also agree a basic setup (to suit the average player) out of the factory should be the norm. I always thought it was because they're imports (to GB) and nobody bothered...!

Cheers - Peter.

Actually, the real old-school headstocks (original shape) are on the American Standard, and the big headstocks on the Specials are "CBS School".

I think we all knew that (I'm certainly that ancient and go back further than Hendrix) but the CBS headstocks are still pretty old. I think it's just a turn of phrase, not an edict! My Special is one fine guitar; I don't care what headstock it's got...

Even if it's larger than the flight deck of the HMS Ark Royal.

It's surprising how few Fender and 3rd party products take advantage of that surplus headstock area. Bespoke tuners or led light shows or capo holders or whatnot...

At the other end, there's the Parker Fly headstock:

Useful if you need to slice some cheese, I guess.

Wow, an HMS Ark Royal reference? You went full "Old Guy" for that one...too bad she was sunk by U-81, kind of like CBS almost did to Fender!!!

Her sinking was the subject of several inquiries; investigators were keen to know how the carrier was lost, in spite of efforts to save the ship and tow her to the naval base at Gibraltar. They found that several design flaws contributed to the loss,( CBS can relate) which were rectified in new British carriers.

Ark Royal was the only British carrier I could think of off the top of my head.

Of course now they have none, just as with Canada and Australia......

:(

If they have that tinker toy truss rod at the bottom of the neck they wont sell it to me.

I got 4 American Standards, 3 are registered to me 2008 P 2013 and 2014 and the black one is all 2014 new parts build from Stratosphere.
Im set unless I can get a Custom Shop 64 reissue
