I don't know if there was a problem with Townshend's Les Paul in a clip I saw of Won't Get Fooled again from a live show that happened several days ago.

In the middle of the song, he handed over the LP and went back to his red Strat.

Shoulder pain? Missed his whammy? Wondered why LPs don't have Lace Sensors and Fishmen? Couldn't play anything without string trees?

On-stage guitar changes are often due to tuning changes. But not knowing what songs he switched between, it's not even going to be informed speculation.

In Pete Townshend's case, there may also be a need to hold a cheaper guitar near the end of a show, in case a smashing moment arrives...

I'll say!

Look what happened at the Monterey Pop Festival.

After all the damages were totaled up by the band's bean-counters, they didn't even break even after that show!

According to the account posted at The Who's website, Townshend wasn't happy with the sound he was getting out of the Les Paul - was apparently the first time he had played a Les Paul on stage since the late '70s.

Townshend has also been experimenting with a Strat with Gibson mini-humbuckers installed to get something closer to his '70s sound; I saw some pictures from Desert Trip of him using that guitar in addition to his signature Torino Red Strat.

Changing from LP to Strat?

Probably because you lose your high-end hearing as you age, even without the effects of tinnitus, so you need a Strat's more trebly sound. Just need to be careful you're not TOO trebly for any audience!

This is my experience anyway - I have tinnitus and am over 60. The nuisance is that, at the same time, I sometimes feel that the high end is 'scratching' my left eardrum - it sounds like that on my SC Strats but not on my HH Strats - but not all the time. Anyone else get that? Just an age thing, I suppose...

Cheers - Peter.

You might be right, Peter. As I age I've had to adjust my amp's EQ settings to avoid the "icepick syndrome", especially with a Strat.
